That 180 degree should be heated to a red when bending, should be tempered back..otherwise too soft I think, about dark cherry red then quenched in oil.

This is only a stop gap fix until you get a replacement spring. The spring is shortened by forming a new hook or loop. There will be a bit less length of working material making the spring more stiff. If it is pulled through the same range as before, the stresses will be higher and it will break sooner. Keep the spring and hooks coated with grease to help extend its life. Of course, this can backfire. If the machine is used in a dusty location, the grease will attract dirt and abrasives adding a new problem.
