More Roses & Chickies...

Not many roses blooming, but lots of drama in the hen house! It's been really cold, like low 50s, even into the high 40s. The girls are not laying early in the morning probably due to the coldness. So, they start laying around 11:00 on. As usual, they only want to use the two nesting boxes at either end of the row. Usually, it's the one to the back that most of them want. The one near the entrance is Esmeralda's spot. She takes forever to get her egg laid every day. And suddenly now some of the girls seem to be preferring her spot. I'm getting more eggs in her box than I used to. Well. this afternoon, Josephine was in a hurry to lay her egg, and got into a fight with Ezzie, even kicked her out of the box. Several of the girls went in to spectate. It was quite interesting...

BELAMI

Josephine giving Ezzie the evil eye, trying to let her know she wanted in the box.

Ezzie wouldn't move, so Josephine decided to try sitting on her.

Gertie was getting tired of all the hubub, so she was contemplating laying her egg in another box, since Elvira was in the main one... however that didn't happen...

ESPERANCE

Josephine keeps trying to shove Ezzie out of the box. Ezzie actually bit her on the neck several times before deciding to give up and get out.

Jo sat for maybe 4-5 minutes, then stood up and strained to get her egg out!

Her sister Fred was patiently waiting on the poop board to see who'd get done first, Jo or Elvira..

while Griselda also waited down below her, sitting on the boxes that nobody uses...

Ezzie went on out and foraged with Henrietta while Jo was laying her egg.

Fred went out an hung out with Gertie

They both contemplated laying up on the rice straw bale, but changed their minds..

    HONEY BOUQUET

Grizzie was glad Fred left, cuz she wanted on Ezzie's box next..

So, she snuck over there before her sister came back to finish her job...

Henrietta was like... "I'm so glad I already laid my egg earlier!"

    NANCY REAGAN

And of course, she had to go check to see if sister Gertie laid an egg up there. (she's been known to do that once in awhile...)

And Morticia had to check things out too...

Fred went back to see if Elvira was done yet... no luck... maybe later????

    SHOCKWAVE

Morticia was spacin' out, waiting for all the girls to get done so she could go in... what a day!!

and one more rose to finish things out...

Our henhouse had a row of "condos". Each nest had sides and top cover. I hated putting my hand inside for an egg when there was a hen sitting. She did not like her egg taken.

    Love HONEY BOUQUET.

Like, irisgal and Ingrida, I too love that picture of Honey Bouquet...................and Shockwave, what an eyepopping shade of yellow.

Love the chicken pictures. They sure are amusing. I think I'd end up spending lots of time caught up watching their antics. <grin>

Loved the narrative and pics, Beth!!! Humans are not the only ones who create drama! Isn't it interesting how they all want to use one or two nesting boxes when there are so many others to choose from - like a bunch of kids!

What gorgeous hens!!! I loved their story!!! That made my day!!! I just love chickens! Do fresh eggs really taste that much better than store bought ones? :)

    Thanks everybody!

    Love the saga title Jasmine!!

Carol, yes the eggs do taste a little different. I guess I'm just used to it now tho. I don't wash my eggs until I use them. From what I've read, they have a natural coating on them that protects from bacteria. If you don't wash the eggs, they supposedly should last about 3 months in the fridge. Once they are washed they only last about a month. The store bought ones are of course washed before going to market, so they don't keep as long. Plus you figure by the time they get into the markets, they're a few days to a week old, or even more. So they technically don't last more than a couple of weeks. Definitely a plus for the fresh eggs!

Interesting. I'll have to find a farm or go to a farmers' market to give fresh eggs a try.

Fresh eggs are so special and the yolks are so rich. It's hard to describe. I love it when there are twins ie. two yolks which happens frequently. I'd love to have chickies, but will get m kick from this post which is really one of my faves. PLEASE continue posting their adventures; it must be endlessly entertaining watching their antics.

Beth - that's interesting about not washing them to keep them fresher. :) :) I love this thread!

Beth I have enjoyed seeing your roses and your chickens, this is one of my favorite threads. I didn't realize that chickens were so comical, I know they keep you busy and entertained. While I was researching chickens I also read about not washing the eggs due to the fact that they have a protective coating that keeps them from bacteria and keeps them fresh. It's wonderful how Mother Nature takes care of things! Please keep posting your roses and chicks!
