As long as you sell them as "mixed sizes" and don't have the big ones hiding in the bottom.

We include Clementine and Mountain Magic in our cherry tomato mixed boxes all the time. I just call them "Big Cherries". We also sell those two varieties mixed and individual for the same price as the smaller cherries. No one has ever said a thing. I have tried to sell the bigger ones by the pound and it always fails, so big cherry tomatoes is what it is!

Price is at the root of the problem IMO. We charge $2.50 per hp box for the cherry types, only $2.00 per box for larger tomatoes. So it seems deceptive to now start inserting slightly larger ones in with cherry tomatoes when we had not been doing so all season long. Anything hardball size or larger have always been sold individually on trays.

My wife assumes that since the customer selects the box there is no harm but I feel that the selection choices are stacked against the customer. And it just doesn't look right. In the past I've spotted hybrid tomatoes mixed in boxes of higher priced heirloom tomatoes and I usually will promptly replace them. This would seem to me to be a similar wrong. Am I over analysing?

I think you are over analyzing. Do an experiment, put some bigger ones in some of them, and don't put them in others and see which one sells first.

Here are some of mine, you can see they are all different sizes. Big and little, pear, grape and cherry.

Nice display JR, but it is evident that you do things quite differently, similar to other vendors at our markets. We have been fortunate in that we have such a strong following that all season long customers were willing to pay more for our half-pint boxes of cherry tomatoes than for competitors pint boxes. I feel that I don't want to deceive that trust at this time, when no other vendors in our markets still have tomatoes. To that end I refused to increase the price from the season-long price, even though we only had 42 hp boxes of these "subbed mixes".

I almost envy your display of small tomatoes but we have only 25' of table frontage and much other produce so we only commit 4 or 5 compact rows(boxes) on the table to cherry varieties. We do use the plastics mesh pt boxes for certain pepper varieties and shiitake mushrooms but not tomatoes. As my system seems to work I'm reluctant to experiment with a method which is quite likely to decrease profits and create customer uncertainty.

Thanks, different markets, different customers, different part of the country. We sell pints baskets and like you we don't change the price the whole year, $3.50 a pint. When we get tons of them we do 3 for $10, not a huge savings, but it moves more product.

Both of these pics are from my Wednesday market. You can have as big of a space as you want. We usually only have 12-20 vendors so all the produce people put up as big of a display as possible to make the market seem "Bigger". At our Saturday market I buy one 10 by 20 stall. Things are a little tighter, but I still put out a good display.
