Fall color is variable and will depend a lot on siting. Mine turns a yellow gold color before developing into more red, so I'd say a yellow to orange to red color is pretty typical!! LOL!

While pretty much any Japanese maple will develop decent fall color, I would not consider that aspect an especial feature of this cultivar. I'd consider its size, congested, layered leaves and overall growth habit to be its winning points.

Yellow to orange to red... hmm no wonder why i see all these colors of this maple in the pictures I found. And I did not know there was a Japanese maple whose main attribute is NOT its fall color! I guess thats not the only thing about Japanese maples overall.

Btw, do you know if there are any Japanese maples that has fall colors that turn only to orange? I know the green laceleaf varieties do but I'm looking for an upright version.

There's hundreds of kinds chosen for various attributes. 'Katsura' is a comparatively prevalent one that is orange in spring and fall. But as stated, in addition to kind of tree soils, weather and exposure affect specific outcomes - that is why New England is so good for fall color.

Well, if you consider that the fall colours are a 1-2 week show, I'm wondering how many people choose a Japanese Maple primarily for that aspect. I certainly did not, and consider the fall colours an added bonus more than anything, so I will take whatever colours come my way.

On the other hand a grouping of them can be planned to have an autumn color sequence just as is done with flower colors of plants grown for their flowers.

Well what I wanted to do is have 3 Japanese maples planted close to each other and show a different fall color from each(red, orange, yellow). So far I have these in my list: fireglow maple(red), aoyagi maple(yellow), and I just need one more orange fall colored one. I'm thinking of acer palmatum waterfall since I have one right now and it turned orange but I would prefer an upright non dissected one.

I really like the color of my Ki Hachijo this year, it's somewhere between a orange and yellow.
