Dondeldux, all these many many amaryllis you grow, do you summer every single amaryllis you own outside for the summer in the garden, or do you grow every amaryllis indoors year round? You.must have hundreds of amaryllis by now. Grown from seed and boughten bulbs! Question the ones you grow from seed do the seedlings ever see outside or are they grown in your windowsill right from day 1 to first bloom?

About 3/4 of my collection goes outside for the summer. These are mainly bulbs that if something did happen to them they could easily be replaced. Not a hard and fast rule as I have a covered deck that I can put special bulbs on and wheel them in if we should get deluged with rain which doesn't seem to happen at all these days. Especially the ones planted in the plastic coffee cups which don't dry out as readily as those in the terra cotta pots. Also, They grow better outside where they receive at least a half day of sun throughout the day..

I have several windows and a baker's rack that receive a lot of sun in the summer indoors and in these I keep my special bulbs, they never go out. Those that can not be replaced and some of my seedlings that have attained some size. Some bulbs I plant for the summer in whiskey barrels and then are replanted in my silly coffee cups and brought inside.

Last season, I had about 1 dozen of my Komoriya bulbs that just wouldn't grow so I stuffed them in a barrel and in the fall they had all grown nice roots and leaves. I repotted them in my coffee cups and they are doing fine. I plan to put more Komoriya bulbs outside in barrels this coming year, they seemed to like it. Only one went missing probably due to a squirrel, it just disappeared!

And yes, many of my seedlings do go out and they are weeded out that way expecially if we have extreme heat, only the strongest survive. If I have 10 seedling of one cross I might end up with just 3 in the fall, those come in and get special treatment. If all my seedling grew to bloom, we'd have to move out of the house!

If I remember correctly, a few years ago you asked for some bulbs and seeds on this forum and I sent you some seeds and Maida (Ray) graciously sent you some papilio offsets!! How are these all doing for you?

That was a disaster as when the seeds were sent to me I was in my past apartment it only had NE WINDOWS and the seedlings didn't do much of anything so they withered away. Sighhhhh. And the papilio never did root for me as they were actively growing when they were dug up for.me and they had they're leaves cut off while green so they never did grow back for me :( I'm still trying to find dormant papilio I can plant and grow as now I have hot sun SW windows BUT living in good old lame Canada u don't get papilio bulbs to buy. So u gotta find ones in USA and get them across the border.

On that note everyone gets scared sending bulbs to Canada on here...well.. I got those papilio fine from him. He just declared them as books lol. I've gotten caladium bulbs from Florida eBay seller. He declared them as decorative balls. lol. But ya I'm dying to find papilio that's dormant that didn't have its leaves cut off while growing. I appreciated what he did for me don't get me wrong, but if u yank a bulb up when its actively growing and slice off the fresh leaves and the roots don't get wrapped all the roots shriveled off in transit. Then there's little hope of it coming back. I waited over a month after I got it and it never re rooted and it never grew back so it was a gonner :(.

Might see if there's any dormant blooming size bulbs I can buy on here. Needing miniatures varieties too. Papilio is just to rare to find. But I'll keep looking for a papilio now that I have sun windows

I was just on komoriya ebay website and noticed they say in all there ads for each amaryllis they sell say the bulb sizes are small to medium. I don't wanna drop $40 plus Canadian on pea sized seed bulbs lol. How big are komoriya bulbs? They state small to medium size but then again there Japanese so likely they don't know there sizes!. They told me the best month of the year to buy and plant there bulbs so they root and grow instantly.
