Rooting Hoyas different ways

Just rooting a few Hoyas, different appearances.

This a no ID Pubicalyx rooted in water

a Diversifolia crassipes rooted in pure pumice

this one was also enclosed in a makeshift terrarium when I started it. Then it was in a little pot of pumice, uncovered, now I've just moved it to mix.

Today, it's suddenly Winter in NYC & I'm potting up Hoya cuttings, yikes!

I have rooted a few Hoya as all mine started as cuttings from friends. A friend recommended I use sporangium moss as a rooting medium. I think the Sp moss roots develop quicker and are not as fragile as roots from water. I've had good results rooting in my potting mix.

Large diameter stems root fast in potting mix and small diameter stems do much better in the Sp moss for me.

These cutting are 120-90 days old.

Really nice looking plants, generous friends too; looks like you grow outside.

I've never heard of that medium, will keep my eyes open. I'm just messing around w/ what I already have to work w/ at home.

The Pubicalyx cutting rooted in water in maybe a month or 6 wks or so. It's a branch from a largish plant which was getting in my way, so I just cut it off.

I'm seeing really good growth now that I have a good root system, nice color under the t5ho lights. I want to get them in larger baskets...I need more window!. I hope to see some blooms in the next year or so.

Hi Karen,

They all look happy and ready to take off. I root a lot of mine right in my soil mix, but I think the nicest, fattest and fastest roots come in chunky perlite. I started using it with woody-type Hoyas, like obovata and kerrii, but have used it with many others as well and it always gives me a great root system. It's fun to experiment with different rooting methods!

Hey Denise,

I often root in mix too, but was all out, having given away most of my mixes & supplies when I thought I'd be moving.

I just donated the Pubicalyx cutting to my Indoor Gardening group as that was all I had to share right now & have potted up the Crassipes diversifolia.

Actually (as I recall) YOU IDed this for me from cuttings I got back from my sister around June 2015 (I was her only Hoya source). Maybe from Norma a few yrs. earlier?

Luckily I still have some pumice.
