Laura, there are several types of trifoliate hybrid rootstock being used today. The C35 that I like to buy my trees on is considered semi dwarf. In fact trifoliate can be standard, semi or dwarf, it just depends on what that particular rootstock produces from its traits. It may not necessarily apply to Record Buck Farms or Harris citrus but will hopefully help clarify your question better than I'd be able to.

Flying dragon is a contorted dwarf version of the Poncirus Trifoliata. My New Zealand lemonade tree I grafted to US897, a trifoliate hybrid of flying dragon X Cleopatra mandarin. It to is a true dwarf that is much more vigorous than the FD rootstock.

Of the Trifoliate cultivars only the Flying Dragon variety is a dwarfing rootstock. It is also a cold hardy variety. As poncirusguy wrote US897, a cross of Flying Dragon X Cleopatra mandarin is also a dwarfing rootstock. However, due to the crossing with Cleopatra it is rated as being only moderately cold hardy, and field trials has shown some tree death when it reaches the age of approximately 10 years, due to a few of the diseases.

Silica Those of us up north will probably have little to no problem with death in 10 years. We are not in citrus country. Can you direct me to the article on these diseases. People with only a few trees can give the attention that and orchard owner can't to individual trees.

If you have a choice between FD and US897 I would suggest the FD. I had access to the US897 seeds and FD is much harder to graft to. It was the only choice for me. There are a few citrus tree you can plant out side successfully with a tent for protection only if those trees are on FD. US897 will die in your area every winter.
