I recently puchased a large multi-trunk Ficus nitida. The nusery installed the tree. During transport the box fell apart. They used a bobcat with pallet forks to lift the tree. This pealed the bark on 2 of the 3 trunks in sections about 1.5ft by 4". The damaged trunks are 6" thick trunks. The undamged one is 8". They struggled for hours to get this tree planted knocking a significant amount of dirt off the root ball. Before they left they wraped the tree loosely with a white gauze looking material. They said the tree would be fine but I am hesitant on taking their word for it. Will the tree likely survive? Will the bark heal itself? If so is it going to leave ugly scars? Should I tell them I want a new tree? The concern is if we finish out our landscaping and the tree dies it will be very difficult to replace it with another large tree. Any advise you folks can offer is appreciated. Thanks!
