I wonder where Susan gets her IDs from. This looks identical to my 'Pink Silver' that is a particularly splashy clone. I suspect the reddening is from high light conditions, but I suppose it could be the clone that makes it more inclined to do this. 'RHP' leaves are significantly different than 'PS' leaves, which is why I wonder what would make her think it was more likely 'RHP' than 'PS', unless it is specifically about the red tones. When my 'RHP' grows in the GH, it will get red/purple new leaves, but now it's in my sunroom and new leaves are just green, so I think even with 'RHP' it's about the amount of light it's getting. As much as I like the new red growth on this one, I'd never spend that much on a starter plant that might turn out to be the same as the 'PS' that I have miles and miles of!

I wondered also if the blooms on these are different. Does anyone you have a picture of the blooms of these "Super Splash" plants? I wonder if it is like thE RHP bloom or the PS?

My ps splash cuttings don't turn red at all. I don't mind having one of these.

Mine is under one T5 bulb....I don't currently have PS, but when I did the leaves, like Lydia's, never turned red no matter how much light they were exposed to....I'm assuming Susan's plant is RHP based on the red new growth, but I could be wrong--hope the plant really is RHP but mairzy_dotes is right--the only sure way to tell is to see flowers...I will say my "normal" RHP plant does have different leaves than this plant--they're smaller and very succulent--this whole pubicalyx complex seems pretty complicated....

Maybe it's a red button splash. Its acting like it.

My super splash that also came from Susan, new leaves looks likeyours Tony. I bought un-rooted cutting.

Hmmmm...well whatever it is, it's beautiful---hopefully someone's will bloom eventually and we'll get a better idea of its identity :-)

By the way Lydia I have two plants supposed to be Red Buttons and neither one shows any red on new growth--yours is very pretty!

I don't think you can necessarily rely on flowers as a determination. Here's an old photo of two umbels I intertwined to show the vast difference in color in flowers on the same plant at the same time ('RHP')...

Gosh I love RHP....and that's just it--Pink Silver and the various other pubicalyxs don't have that variation in bloom color--they're always just a nice solid pink....so if Susan's "Splash" clone blooms with variegated blooms like that, it's probably RHP Splash....I would think?

I think you're right, Shelly. However sometimes Red Buttons has weird colored flowers too. But all of the Pink Silvers and cvs of it I have had have all bloomed very pink corollas with white coronas.

I was wrong guys, it did NOT originally come from Carol Noel. Susan got it from someone on ebay. The leaves are consistently heavily splashed. It has some relation to RHP.

I actually don't think there is ANY hoya " published" as Hoya "splash" anything. I think people just started selling the various cvs that had heavily marked up leaves as "splash" this and "splash" that on eBay because it made them seem more desirable. However....that said....they are very pretty with those type of leaves, and if they hold true to the markings, I guess it is worth the hype. However, I think lighting and sunshine plays a factor in leaf color. I think hoyas kept in less lit areas of the home or garden tend to have much darker, thinner, and marked leaves (on ones that have marks). Many of them that get too much sun get bright red leaves, or burn marks, or...most carnosas and some others just get very thick yellow leaves, losing all the marks. So, there are many factors at play in this also.

Yes, Hello to you, Mitzi. I remember you too. I lost interest for a long time because of a series of much family tragedy and grief. I am slowly recovering and have renewed plant interests lately, so have been visiting the forums again lately. Good to see some of my old friends still here. Many of the ones that used to post here have left also I see. I think people come and go as life and interests change.

I had the same problems as you did Mairzy, family tragedy and other things. I'm also recovering and finally visiting the forums again....... Hope everything turns fine to us, no more tragedy, no more sad things.....................

My "Super Splash" also doesn't have any red markings, like Sweetheart's and tlbean's. Mine gets dappled sun, so we'll see . . .

I guess it depends on the lighting. I took cutting off my plant and it has a new leaf but it is not red. I didnt have it under the bright grow light.

You could try experimenting and put it under lights now for the next leaf to happen.

Many years ago when I got my 'PS', it came to me as pub 'Splash' I later learned it was just a clone of 'PS'. So I think MD is right - sellers push a clone as "splashy" or "silver flecked". And I also agree that they are highly desirable. I've had my splashy clone for probably close to 20 years, and I think most of the splashy 'PS' clones come from mine or the originator of mine. I find the less direct light it gets, the more silver it exhibits. A few years ago, I took this photo of one that just gets bright, reflected light in my dining room...

I think i have actually seen a "royal hawaiian purple splash" advertised by AHHOYA. Maybe its the same clone as that.

Maybe. Do they sell on EBay? Maybe that's the eBay seller she's referring to. You could contact them & ask if they sell them.

Ah....I see. I have never ordered anything from them. His doesn't look as splashed or pretty as Susan's, but maybe it's just those few leaves. That dark maroon color is more typical on the Red Buttons I've had. The RHP ones of mine usually get a lighter reddish splotched pattern it seems.

Yeah, that doesn't look like what Susan is selling....although it does look more like an RHP than hers....look at the pics of my regular RHP (further up the thread) and compare them to the AHHOYA photo---his looks much more like what I would think an RHP Splash should look like....it's all so confusing....but pretty :-)
