Ooops! That was quick. I wonder if the SST anomalies might edge back upwards again. Oh well, time will tell. The latest ENSO update (from last week) only gave it a 55% chance of persisting through winter, so I guess I'm really not surprised. Maybe we'll stay neutral for a while. That would be nice.

This La Nina has been on / off / on / off ..... etc ..... ever since the El Nino dissipated . I think they don't know what's gonna happen.

I agree. We are living in strange times weatherwise and climatewise.

Does this mean we may finally get some rain?

Who can tell? I think some people will. This has been a weak La Nina but that is of little comfort to those of you who have been on the short end of the stick all year in terms of rainfall.

Technically, La Nina is tracked and declared to be "on" or "off", so to speak, based on sliding three month averages of the data that they track, so this one, technically speaking, will continue on for a while. If it is weakening, I suppose that is a good thing for areas normally dry during a La Nina, but La Nina is only one of many factors that influence the weather so whether we have La Nina, El Nino or are in a neutral state is just a portion of the weather picture.

I'm optimistic (more so than usual) that 2017 is going to be a great garden year with at least adequate rainfall for all of us. Perhaps I feel that way because, in our county, 2015 brought record-breaking rainfall, 2016 brought slightly above average rainfall, and no big drought is staring us in the eye. I might feel differently if I was in a drier portion of Oklahoma like you are, but even for y'all, I think things are going to get better. Just remember that winter is usually awfully dry anyway, so we may not know until spring if the rains are going to fall consistently. My planting plans for 2017 are based on us getting great rainfall so I hope the weather cooperates with me---and with you too. It is a rare year that you're drier there than we are here, and now it has happened for two years in a row, so I feel like your luck surely is about to change.

I think it says the good weather folks .... really don't know what its gonna do. They have trouble predicting out five days, much less five months, or five or fifty years.

When the El Nino faded , they predicted a La Nina, there was 80% chance. Then they said only 20% chance, then I lost track.

I saw this the other day on the difficulties of a nine day forecast.

So, I'm curious, with all this forecasting, what the new weather satellite is going to do for us? I recall reading it'll take a couple years of data accumulation before they start providing readings.
