That looks like sunburn Jim. I see shadows in your pic, are these alocasias in full sun all day or somewhat shaded in the afternoon?

This past summer a fairly small branch broke in the canopy of a large oak and a beam of sunlight burned some philodendrons that were under it. I was scratching my head until I happened to be out there when the sun was on them.

Yes they are in full sun all day with intermittent periods of shade. But I have grown them for a few years now in very similar conditions and have never had this problem. Admittedly the first 2 that ever done this were getting hot afternoon sun and the one's in the more shaded areas were not affected. I still have ones growing here with the same amount of sun, but showing no affect. And sometimes as the new leaf starts to come out it will shows signs of this bleaching before the sun can even get to it. So I am at a bit of loss to explain it.
