Thanks. They aren't rare or particularly expensive plants, but it is frustrating because I really like the aloes and I don't want to sub something else. However, I've chosen a Mariken ginkgo as one patio table replacement and am considering some of the euphorbias. I'm open to additional suggestions! These are in full sun locations, so in summer they have to take the heat in containers. Since hand watering is required, less needed is desirable. Still working out the ground-planted aloe replacement plants.

stanofh, from everything I've read, Bayer doesn't work for aloe mites. I might try cutting it out since there is little else to lose.

I tried cutting the one section out, but then saw just a hint showing on another fork, too. Unfortunately, they were in the center of the plant, and it affected the overall form considerably. After traveling the multi-year road to despair with the previous aloes, I bundled my inner strength and went for the quickie divorce. But I'll try to keep your recommendations in mind as I attempt to keep the last remaining fan aloe mite free for as long as possible.

gyr_falcon, I had the same attitude about manzanitas in my yard. 8 years ago I did a big renovation and planted a lot of CA natives. The manzanitas were my favorite, even in the heat of summer with no water they are green and good looking. And they grew fast, I was really happy with them. I had several Sunsets, Sentinel, Glauca and Howard McMinn. But starting 5 years after I planted one by one they all got the branch die off virus and slowly perished. The sentinel was kind of holding on but I decided I also needed a quickie divorce and yanked it out and replaced it with a rhus ovata.

I agree about the beauty of manzanita. It would be extremely difficult to have thriving ones go. I lose four for every one that agrees to limp along, so it hurts less if they turn. But I have decided no more funds for manzanitas--will just enjoy them in the wild instead. Although, last spring, I did buy some Keckiella cordifolia "to kill". I wish I could just buy a hunk of land with the native plants already established.
