Same song; second verse! (Storm)

When I got up at 0730...

Real temp 11°

Wind Chill - Minus 9

Wind 27 mph

Ladies, it's cold outside.

I had to force the back door open to reach the heavy broom so I could push the snow away from the front door. Both doors were packed with snow and frozen shut. I get a bit panicky when I can't open the doors. Of course if I needed to get my pups out; I'd get the doors open tout suite.

A neighbor across the alley was trying to free her Christmas lights' cords from the ice around the outlet. We both hollered but could not hear one another over the wailing winds, so we shook our brooms in the air as a greeting.

DH suggested I hop on my broom and zoom over to her house so we could visit. I suggested he ...

I hung the flag in honor of Pearl Harbor Day and started clearing the bird trays.

I pushed enough snow and ice off the three feeders I have on the front porch so the birds could get to the seed. I added a quart of BOSS to each feeder to hold them until I can really bundle up and top off all the feeders in the tree.

Now I'm thawing out with a cup of tea getting ready for round two.

The base is closed again today.

How did our pioneering mothers survive? They were made of a stronger mettle than I seem to be.

Looking south out of a sunporch window as he tries to clear the patio between the garage and mudroom entry. The dark clots are snow globs stuck to the screen.

Is this pic too big? You may have to click on it to fix the distortion.

OH boy that is a lot of snow. I did the usual sweeping and shoveling needed and let the rest go in the driveway. We are predicted to have snow for the rest of this week and then some but not in large amounts. I did walk to the post office. About 6 blocks round trip. my eyes were streaming tears from the cold about half way there. While I was dressed for the outing I went to the garage and got a drill bit to fix TV VHS DVD cords through cabinet and grabbed some meat to thaw for me took garbage out and picked up kitty deposits in the carport. When it is the only ground not wet and frozen..............................

We were supposed to have 12 degrees but when I got up it was 19. Because of out side kitties I do not feed the birds here. Neighbor does a good job of it.

So glad that isn't here yet!

Duck Imhappy it could be heading your way. I read on the internet the jet stream has really dipped bringing in cold air from Canada. We are still under cloud cover here and now 21 degrees.

My late husband and I spent 10 winters in rural Maine, near the Mt Washington valley in NH. It was very cold and there was a LOT of snow. But we were VERY lucky as we lived in a dorm apt at a boarding school. The only thing we had to clear snow from was a small back walk to the car, and the car itself. Everything else was done by the school. My husband would usually come home when he had a free period and shovel out as we usually drove the car to the dining hall to dinner - very, very cold air hits my asthma-ridden lungs like someone dropping a concrete block on them.

I really didn't mind the snow and cold up there. It was a dry cold - here it is very damp - and the sun shone most days. I must say I had little inclination to go out - no where to go for one thing - one can only go so many times to the outlet malls in N Conway! So, I read a lot with dogs and cats on my laps, spent time on the computer, and napped a bit. It was really quite pleasant, but would not be if one had to plow out to the main road and had to be somewhere. Of course, my husband just walked over to his classroom!

Animals on laps do warm things up nicely.

I do have a lot less animosity towards winter and snow now that I am retired and don't have to go out unless I want to. :)

Totally agree on the retirement making winter easier. I get canned food and wet water out to the porch kitties as soon as I get up while coffee is perking. Very happy I no longer have large animals to have to care for.

I made a really nice bed for the old porch kitty and another took it over so if I can get one of the two big kennels out of the catico today I will be working on another kitty bed for the porch. At 15 degrees out there it could be frozen to the ground. The porch kitties used to sleep together in a pile up. I guess they have had a falling out with each other and no longer do that. Each wants its own space. Mentally trying to round up all needed things so when I do go out there I can grab them and get this put together quickly.

And now third kitty bed made in large kennel and YAH she likes it. If they are not going to sleep in the pretty soft warm glass house I made for them I will take it down in spring. Brats. I did break the kennel loose from the ground in the Catico. Then I brought it into the house by the front door on vinyl mud ice and all and worked on it. I had to take it apart to get the cardboard box inside it. Box wrapped with the emergency blanket like a present. With cut out in the front for entry. Fluffy pillow in bottom. And I set the inside box up on a folded box in the bottom of the kennel for insulation. Topped the inside box with a king sized pillow wrapped around it and draped a blanket down over the front to stop some of the drafts. She can still see out a little bit.

As expected I put her in the new bed and she sat there a minute and left. I waited a little bit and she is back in there. Hopefully four beds three cats every one has a warm place to sleep. 18 degrees out there now and snowing again.

I see no point in walking to the post office today even if my P O box is full. Maybe tomorrow. We are supposed to get three inches of snow today so I will have to plow tomorrow I can drive to the post office with the plow tomorrow.

Sounds like those kits are going to be cozy! I had an outside cat for a number of years. She had belonged to various neighbors and finally I was "Door #3". I took a dog kennel and filled it with bedding and then surrounded it with some moving quilts. They are nice and thick. It sat in a wicker chair on my covered front porch, facing away from any wind. She was quite comfy in there. With fresh water and food, she had all the comforts of home. I tried once to bring her in, but she would not have it. She spent her whole life outside. When there was snow on the ground, but the sun was shining, I would take a cushion for a chair and put it in the driveway in the sunshine and she would come and curl up on it. While I would have preferred that she come inside, I had to respect her wishes. :)

Murraysmom that is how it is here. I would have them inside but they choose not to be inside. right now the other two kennel beds are empty so no idea where the kitties are. There are two more beds in the garden shed. They also like to get into the culvert but when snow plowing starts on the road. I have to be sure they are out of the culverts then I close them off so they are not sealed in there and die.

18 degrees now and still snowing. It is a fine snow and not building up much for as long as it has been snowing. This is fine by me.

Shades, you do have a lot to consider when it comes to the kitties, don't you? Last night, a little after midnight, I took the pups outside for their final potty break of the day/night. There was a nice dusting of snow on the ground and it was snowing lightly. They had their little coats on and it was so quiet outside. So peaceful. It was really cold, so we didn't linger, but it was fun to be outside with them in the snow. I let them loose at the end of my driveway so they could run back to the house. They get a big kick out of doing that. :)

Carmelita really needed a haircut in this picture.

Fred looks like he just won Best in Show in his picture.

My friend made both their little coats. They aren't crazy about wearing clothes, but when it's this cold, they do appreciate the extra help.

    Murray, this is our Fred!

oh, such cute babies! I'm not sure about the expression on Carmelita's face tho. maybe 'is that you with the clicker thing again?' or 'don't dare think I'm going out there again!' ?

    Aw they are so cute.

We got hammered with snow. This morning the city and county plowed and I am socked in again worse then yesterday. I hope I have enough gas for the plow to clear it all. I will mostly deal with the front of the garage so I can get the car out. Not that I am going anywhere. Drinking coffee now then out to plow. Really hoping I get it done before the predicted rains come and make it even harder to move. Shoveled the back patio last night late and need to do it again. And I might do that first. Then if it rains I will have that part done.

Eld, your Fred is a handsome boy!! Very stylish too! I like his ears. My Fred's ears stick up sometimes, but mostly fold.

Shades, I am not looking forward to the snow. While it is beautiful, it is such a pain to shovel. I have great neighbors and they sometimes help me out with that chore. I keep my chiropractor on speed dial! I hope your shoveling goes smoothly and quickly!

Stay warm folks. We had a cold snap here in SW FL last night. It got down into the upper 40's. (Ouch! Who threw that snowball at me?) Seriously, I'm so glad we gave up the cold up north in the winter. I don't miss it.

cpartist - Ouch! Who threw that snowball at me?
