This looks like a combination living/dining area to me. You could put a seating group (long sofa facing the fireplace and armchairs or loveseats flanking it) by the fireplace and a dining set between this seating group and the kitchen. As for the colors, it really depends on what you like. Maple can handle both the contrast and a monochrome color scheme.

All the woodwork looks fine in this space. Perhaps change the wall color to a warmer tone.

Layer browns, beige and neutrals in different textures. Layout is tough from one picture need to see all 4 walls

Round dining table .... couch in front of fireplace with long narrow table placed along back side of couch (holds mail, keys, photographs) ... no tv!... have photo blown up and framed to put above fireplace or a piece of original art.

Do you have furniture already? If so, colors, style and size would help. Yes you have lots of maple but thanks goodness the space seems bright and open. Your FP is great. Will this be your living room or will you use the space on the other side of the FP? If so, i would consider moving the chandelier so you can have the dining table closer to the FP. Then create a seating area closer to the kitchen with two slipper chairs or casual seating. Of course you could keep the table there, but with what I believe are patio doors it might be nice to have it more open. A great place for morning coffee. I also think you would be able to put a larger table in then.

Paint the mantle. Paint one feature wall a more popping color. Add window treatments. Add a rug and break the room up into seating areas. Add artwork and furniture.

Thank you! I do have one large dark brown leather sofa and matching loveseat for this area. So I need to tie it all together with a large rug and some other furniture. I do have a separate dining room off this room + behind the fireplace is an office/sitting room. I was trying to incorporate a tv somewhere in this room although hidden either by mirror cover or cabinet. I felt the fireplace was too high. You can see by photo that there is a long wall that I need to do something with. I did buy a large abstract paiting for over fireplace. This room although spacious and bright feels so awkward to me. Thank you for any input!
