Transboundary haze, Charles. Southeast Asia goes under that blanket every dry season--wildfire, slash and burn, etc. You can tell how bad it is by how breath-taking sunsets are throughout the year. A particularly clear and breathable sky will get you the kind of sunset you see in corporate calendars (healthy, sure, but blegh). If something large is burning in Sumatra though? Purples and oranges and, you know, marmalade skies.

I was fortunate enough to be in Malaysia during some of the early "haze" problems during the ninties. Newspapers were told not to comment on it, it was a national secret so tourists wouldn't stay away. We get some nice sunsets here whenever somebody decides to set the state on fire. I'd rather pass on them.

Smaller pots slow growth, so unless we are growing them to stay small, the small pots are slowing them.

I've seen this in my garden too.

They do not like full sun in Florida summer. I keep mine on a west facing porch that gets fading sun half the day. They can acclimate to tolerate more sun, but would not do as well planted in the middle of the yard with no shade as they would in 30-50% shade throughout the day in my experience. They like certain types of fertilizer, and not very much moisture in Florida too, since it can be quite humid. I need to read this paper. I am a UF grad and IFAS is a fantastic resource for any gardening or farming related advice in the general area or southern states.

I have had mine outside in FULL south Texas coastal sun the past few years, and I agree with you Daniel. They would do better with some shade or partial shade. I always notice the plants suffering during the height of summer. They make it, but they slow their growth noticeably.
