Yes, though it would be better to dig them and move them to new permanent location than pot them if possible. I did this with perennials three years ago when I moved in November.

I'd leave them outside rather than garage, they may start growth prematurely.

Btw, it would possibly be helpful to know zones and/or locations. My advise may not be good for subarctic zone 3 or lower ;)

I forgot I wasn't on a local spot! I'm in Tennessee and it got down into the teens last winter and stayed for a couple of weeks more than once. We're having some 19-20 degree nights now off and on so I didn't know if it was too late to plant them in the ground. I probably can go ahead with quite a few of them if it's not too late. Thanks so much!

In zone 6 and 7, you can plant year round. Just make sure to water well to eliminate big air pockets.

If they can be planted in their new permanent location, it would be much better for the plant to do that instead of trying to overwinter them in pots. Most woody plants and most perennials can be planted during winter months without any problem. There are some exceptions. Many plants with thick rope-like roots don't do well when moved during winter months, and marginally hardy plants my suffer if transplanted then. These are the exceptions, though. And, even the ones that may have a hard time if replanted now would still have a better chance if planted in the ground instead of being held over in pots.

I'll be digging in the cold but I'd rather do that than lose them all. Amazing how we get attached! It's only an across town move so at least there won't be a climate difference. I knew I could get a good answer here! Thanks so much!

Yeah, pots really aren't the preferred habitat of anything :) Not even my cacti are as happy as they would be in the ground (till the wet spring got them).
