I think you'll find that raw beef fat will just stink and attract rodents & raccoons. In the warm months, it would probably also attract bugs.

Instead, I would render it down into tallow and make some suet feeders for the birds that stick around for the winter. There are lots of recipes for DIY suet feeders in out there on the internet.

Suet feeders are one of the best things you can do for non-migratory songbirds (of which there are more than you think!)

thanks callights. Would I just heat it, to render it? But.....I was thinking it would feed the coons, etc. (which was my original intent)......so maybe it would be okay in freezing weather?

You can render tallow by putting the fat in a pot with some water. Simmer the pot for a few hours, adding a little water whenever it starts to get low. Once you're done, strain it through a sieve and wait for it to cool. Then skim the fat off the top.

Feeding racoons will just encourage them to hang around your house and dig through your garbage. I'd avoid it. Suet feeders are much better for the world!

Raccoons go for suet too..we don't put suet out anymore..we saw the raccoons and squirrels eating most of it..finally something stole the basket..never did find it..I tied an old woven bag (for onions, potatoes etc) filled with fat (free from the meat dept) to a tree and would get woodpeckers and Carolina wrens and never saw a raccoon on it..squirrels less interested in fat than suet..it's kind of gross and got tired of messing with it..the woodpeckers love it though..
