Are you having the sink undermounted or sitting on top of the countertops? This will also make a difference in the amount of clearance you have.

Is there no better place to put a trash pullout in this kitchen? That sink seems crazy huge to me, and I'd resent the loss of the cabinet space underneath. Heck, I'd be tempted to stick a lidded trashcan somewhere else rather than choose between these two options, but you're only showing us a fraction of your kitchen, so maybe there are other constraints...

I recommend going to Target or Walmart and buying a plastic waste basket and put on a unit that slides out of cabinet. It will cost a whole lot less, and be just as functional. Just have to find the right height basket. I found mine at Target! In our last house, I actually bought a taller one and simply took a household blade cutter and cut it down to the size I needed. Put plastic bag or paper liner -- done! I also put "sample" granite tiles to line the bottom of my cabinets under sinks and baskets slide out very nicely and they don't damage interior of cabinets, and clean up great. Sometimes, simple is best! Not fancy, but effective!

I actually have a 10" deep undermount SS sink, and used Ikea's Rationell pullouts for garbage and recycling.

Personally, I dislike the inconvenience of having to open a door and pull out the trash. When your hands are full it's way more convenient to step on a pedal.

If it's possible to love a garbage can, I love my Simple Human from The Container Store. The bag is completely hidden. It comes out easily. Two doors open on the top when you step on the pedal. Easy to keep clean.

The bottom line is NOTHING is more inconvenient, or ruins door finish faster, than opening and closing a door with wet hands/splashes a thousand times a day. This is why the back to back pullout trash and recycle is so popular. Either re think the adjacent drawer base, or the sink. There is no great spot for the very convenient "simple human" can.......without wet hands dripping all over your wood floor, or pulling it near the sink while prepping/cooking. I would avoid under the sink in total. The 36 "hole in the counter" sink would be more convenient than that! Talk about a pain in the kazooooo. Not to mention, there is as much recycle as trash/garbage. Where's that going? Lord, I have a 21/10 inch sink in a 24 cabinet. Prep on a board and send it to the disposal tata!.......more counter space, and a handy pullout!!

I also have the rationell pullouts under my sink with no problem i have no idea of the size since I hate trash in the house longer than a day IMO a 48” wide sink is even wider than most restaurants have so makes no sense to me

I would value counter space over a super large 4 foot wide sink.

Are you doing the ledge sink From Create Good Sinks? If so, we did a 1/2” reveal in the countertop and plan to order more accessories in the future, just haven’t gotten to it yet. I would consider Doing the same unless you feel it’s unnecessary based on how you would use it. It takes a bit more attention to keep the ledge clean but really it’s no biggie. I also did the offset drain so it’s on the right. I don’t think I would want the center drain. That way if there are any dishes or anything in the sink, you can still easily access the drain and disposal if it is off to one side.

Lastly, I have this pop up tub that I store under sink because it folds flat and it‘s super useful given how much water it would take to fill the sink to either soak something or thaw anything. Thank you! And yes, I am very happy with the sink size but if you can fit the 48”, I would go for it. I wish I could have, but I certainly do not regret my decision.
One note, if you have more room than I do...I stand and prep right where the cutting board is and it’s directly in front of the trash pullout. If I had more room, I would place the trash left of the sink so that when both my husband and I are cooking together, the trash is easily accessible without moving. No big deal to me but it annoys the hubby. It’s minor, but worth considering.
Are you purchasing from Creat Good Sinks? If so, I would recommend an offset drain. Mine is on the right and it allows me access to the drain and disposal if there happens to be dishes in the sink or if I am cutting etc.
I would also recommend a collapsible wash basin. it takes entirely too much water to fill the sink so it’s very handy for dishes or soaking anything smaller. I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond.... here is a link.

Lastly, we did a 1/2“ reveal in the countertop as I plan on purchasing additional cutting boards and accessories. While not necessary, I would consider it when deciding how you are going to mount it. It takes a bit more effort to keep the ledge clean but it’s no biggie. Just depends on your preferences.

I just realized the above post did not have any of the information I typed up. Yowza, sorry about that. Goodness, I have typed and retyped this info so many times. It seems the post will not work if I include photos. At least on my iPad.

We we opted for the 36” sink because the 48” didn’t allow for the corner cabinet and I needed the space. I planned the entire kitchen layout around that sink and try as I might, I couldnt effectively make the 48” work. I am very happy with the 36 though. Very happy indeed. It if you can make the 48” work, I would go for it!

Anyhow, I wanted to say that the sink set up with trash underneath only worked because we went with frameless canbinets. With the additional interior space we managed to get a 3/4” clearance from the top of the the trash can to the bottom of the sink. With traditional cabinets, it would not have worked.

Are you happy with putting the trash next to the sink ? i have room on an island or next to the sink and I was wondering if having it in the island if it would be better when more than the two of us are home. Instead of crowding everything next to the sink....but having said that, it seems next to the sink is handier for food prep trash. Also, I was going to do the 1/2" reveal to have two ledges....are you happy with that decision ? Thanks again for sharing pictures ! Your kitchen is really nice !!

We want to have a trash pull-out (either bespoke or after-market) underneath the sink to maximize space (frameless cabinets) in our teeny tiny kitchen. Do you mind sharing the depth of your sink?
