Wisteria

I had a wisteria that did not grow for 5 years. It was alive but never grew, just stayed the same height. After 5 years it took off, grew, sent out runners and bloomed every year after that. My question is; Does a wisteria need root pruning to grow, a barrier to stop the roots and promote growth, or was mine simply pouting? I have just moved to a new location and would like to know if it would be worth the effort to plant another one?

There may be others out there who are better able to answer your question since I'm an interior designer who gardens as a hobby. I can tell you that my experience was similar to yours, this plant was a few years old and never bloomed. I went to garden center and was told to add lots of super phosphate to the soil and take a shovel and break up the root system. I also pruned it WAY back to the point that I thought it would never take hold.... to my surprise it bloomed the following year and hasn't stopped. I would also like to know how to contain the root system, those roots would literally pull up my bluestone patio if left to trail naturally. Happy gardening!

Sheila, similar to lilacs...only a couple of weeks unfortunately.

I just planted a wisteria that my neighbour had grown from one of his wisterias and it grew no problem so I don't know why yours wouldn't. Just make sure you buy it with blooms because some varieties take a long time to start blooming.
