Help with cabinet layout

We are in the process of a kitchen remodel and hoping to get input and advice on the layout we are reviewing. A couple of things.... the microwave is currently above the wine fridge. Should I relocate to a more central location or put in a hidden cabinet? Any ideas for getting more pantry space? Also - Should I give up some uppers to have more windows over the sink? Finally, we are considering adding a bump out to the kitchen to the left of the sink/pantry cabinet. This would be for an eat-in area/booth. Thoughts - would it be worth the cost?

So what is the purpose of the counter by the wine fridge? Is that area china cabinet/sideboard?

You have virtually no prep space. Prime prep space is between sink and stove, and all you have is a tiny corner. You would be much better off putting the pantry where the wine fridge is, and moving the sink to the left. I know that moves the sink from under the window, but if the window can't be moved, you would have a window in front of your prep space, which would be nice.

Ideally, all base cabinets should be drawers, unless you have a very specific need for a cabinet.

Any drawer stack less than 18", or upper cabinet less than 15", is virtually worthless. Much better to space your cabinets to eliminate narrow ones. I do have a 9" base cab that I use for cookie sheets and cutting boards, but I specifically designed it for that purpose.

Angled upper cabinets tend to be a colossal waste of space - I know, I used to have 2 of them! Easy-reach uppers are far superior - and you can likely design it to eliminate the awkward 11" upper to the right of the sink.

Your island leaves very narrow aisles. Remember that the aisle width is measured from the furthest protrusion - either counter overhang or DW handles; I can't tell from the drawings how yours are measured.

Is this a remodel or new construction?

If it's a remodel, what are your goals? For example, my remodel goals were improved storage space and more efficient use of small space - better prep space, and a layout which allows things to be stored close to their point of use.

Is there a dining table by the wine fridge cabinets? If so, do you really need seating at the island?

It is a remodel, so trying to work with the space we have, and the kitchen is somewhat narrow. We are also constrained by garage door entry by refrigerator, and dining room entry by the wine fridge area. That area is intended to be a bit of a butlers pantry connecting the dining room and kitchen. My primary goals are cosmetic- I want new white cabinets, new marble, etc., but also want it to function and for everything to have a place. I share your concerns about functionality of some of these cabinets which were designed to fill the footprint, but may not be super functional. That said, I can't come up with a better arrangement on the appliances. I could move the pantry to where the Butler's pantry is, but feel id be losing the look of that space and counter top that can function as a bar for entertaining. I am not a huge cook, and had planned to use the island for prep, but your suggestion on moving the sink is a good one.

If you are going to keep the island, I think it would be put to better use as a work island only--no seating. For function, I would ditch the pantry, move the DW and sink into that space to provide a wider prep space between the sink and range, and move the range to the left, enough to put some filler between the fridge and wall. If you do a lot of baking, or if you are on the shorter side of average, you might consider making it a couple of inches below counter height:

If you are willing to give up the island, you can wrap the wall to the right with a pantry and the fridge, and give yourself some breathing space around the range.

The wine fridge does not need to take up kitchen space. Why not in the dining room where it is likely to be poured?

You need to maximize the area between sink and stove.

I like mamagoose's plan, it gives you real countertop to work with and a place (island) to set up a buffet if you need to.

Yes to more windows over the sink prep area.
