Aechmea bromeliifolia

Hi everyone.

Jostus – I think your plant
may be one of the Aechmea bromeliifolia varieties of which there are three or
four that I know of.

I have two different varieties
myself, one of which is bromeliifolia var. albobracteata which has green leaves.
The bracts are a light cream colour and it has bright light green flowers.

I also have another which was
originally known as bromeliifolia var. Rubra because of its light brownish/red coloured
leaves. The bracts on this one are a light pink and the flowers initially
appear as a cream colour when they first open and quickly turn to a “dirty” creamy/light
brown colour. The flowers on both plants turn black as they die.

The bromeliifolia var. Rubra
later had the “rubra” dropped from its name by the taxonomists and botanists and
it is now simply known as just Aechmea bromeliifolia.

There are others I don’t have,
and one of these is called Aechmea bromeliifolia
var. angustispica and I think this is possibly the plant you have.

This is just a guess on my
part though, as there are several other different Aechmea types with those same
“corn cob” type flower heads so I may be well clear of the mark with my
suggested ID for you.

I have a red version, which I believe is called "triangularis"

Wow, thanks guys so much information and such beautiful pictures. The suggested ids look so similar to each other to me! Lol It's hard to tell them apart. They look like the same plants! But most pictures show green leaves and mine are very much silvery, brushing red now that the plant is in full bloom. While looking at pics of A. Triangularis, A. Maculata poped up. It looks quite similiar to my plant to me. Idk. Here is a closer look at the flower spike on my plant.
