I believe it is Cladonia rangiferina or similar. It is quite widespread and I have it here too.

It is also known as Reindeer lichen or Caribou moss, but if searching for info the Latin name is always best.

Cladonia subtenuis I believe. There are three rather similar "reindeer lichens' that are frequent in the barrens - subtenuis, arbuscula, and submitis. Rangiferina is around, but uncommon. "Reindeer lichen" will do as an English name for all of them.

thanks, I am absolutely amazed by this lichen. It thrives under xeric conditions, absolutely scorching in summer. In winter not bothered by heavy snow. It seems to be a happy companion to teaberry and the true mosses and not compete with them.

There are more of them than you think, probably. About 500 species in each group, here in New Jersey. Mosses are tough to learn, you need a microscope for sure. The common macrolichens are comparatively easy, you just need a good lens. The complete guide weighs about five pounds: Lichens of North America by Brodo and Sharnoff. But you can get some decent info on line.
