Rain barrel placement

I am installing a 55 gallon rain barrel. I would like to have it placed about 20 feet away from my nearest downspout. My diverter is 6 feet above ground and the inlet to the barrel is the same height. Would it be possible to run a hose from the diverter straight down to the ground, run it 20 feet, and then back up 6 feet to the barrel inlet? I'm thinking that physics would allow it, but wanted to see if anyone has real life results.

I know I could run the hose directly horizontal to the barrel, but I'm thinking this would be more aesthetically pleasing.

Also, would it be better if the barrel inlet is an inch or too lower than the diverter? Trying not to have a geyser-like backup.

Thanks!
