Fireplace stone help

This is a picture of the current fireplace in our second home lake house. The current brick is fake brick from the 1980's . I know there are a lot of nice brick/stone looks available. Should I look for large pieces or the smaller stones . Also the floor is light wood and we want to keep and room is light and airy without a lot of extra stuff because we have a lot of people in season. I am looking for a nice quality look. Thanks for any help .

I would prefer stone. I've seen places that sell sheets of the "real look " stone. I don't want anything to dark but a look that is quality and doesn't shout out. Thanks

Your Fireplace surround is the most massive room divider I have ever seen.

What is behind the black actual FP box?

I would like to see the entire area reworked. IMO no matter what you face this massive structure with, it will be SHOUTING (despite your best efforts).

I guess it must be just a wall behind the gas fireplace box. It is floor to ceiling but the rooms it partially divides are big and open onto a large outdoor deck area. Window overlooks a lake

Do you know if you can remove the entire back structure?

In other words, you would be left with black FP box and chimney only. Would this open the entire area up to the deck and view of the lake?

No it wouldn't. In one of the pictures you see half of the picture window looking over the lake. As you look at that pic to the left is sliding doors to a deck. The fireplace appears big in these pic but is actually fits nicely just dividing a small portion of the family room from the dining room. Keep you ideas coming
