Where to get supplies?

I am ashamed to admit that I let my African Violets go to pot this summer. I was not feeling too well and did not water or take care of them. I definitely need to replant some of them. Where do I obtain the supplies (pots and powder to propagate) Thanks for helping me . It is so cold to work in my garage

Barb, I buy pots from greenhouse megastore on line but I mostly buy cups from the grocery store or club store that I can burn holes into with my soldering iron to make smaller pots

Doug has pots and an outstanding soil.

You do not need rooting powder. you just need to cover the plants and leaves with some light plastic or transparent dome to up the humidity - they will root like crazy.

Garage? You are kidding! Especially after you were sick! What is wrong with putting layers of newspapers on your kitchen table - and a handy trash can nearby. After you are done - you chuck the newspapers - and sweep the floor.

Garage - sounds like a punishment!!

irina_co Thanks for the thoughts. I have a heated garage. My washer and dryer are out there and I have some plants under. flourescent lights. I am z5 IN. I guess I need to read up on this. Good reference book? Barb

Our house in 1988 was built without a garage. . Yesterday the temperature was about 16 F, if I figured it right (-7 C) and that's cold. There was also a wind chill, so it felt colder. I am NOT going outside to plant anything in the snow piles that were melting last week. We are north of Buffalo, NY, and they are in the snow belt. Thursday night some school kids could not get home because of the snow. They spent the night at school. That was a big stor My AV are OK. Some are blooming, but sparsely, some are growing babies. There will be replanting come spring.

Obviously my laundry is not in the garage, but the basement.

The best books on AV are by Melvin Robey. You can fund them on Amazon. If you get Pauline Bartholomew book http://www.avsa.org/node/102it also helps - this book is more concise and to the point. All you need to know in a short version.

There are other good books on AV culture - all are helpful - but these 2 authors are my favorites.

If you go to the library - you will find some older books - and they are to some extent outdated. Growers do not use loam from their vegetable garden as a soil, rarely if at all add cow manure and definitely do not use DDT and other prohibited pesticides to get rid of the bugs.

We had -7F several nights ago. And we usually have down to -20F at the coldest time in Denver - but with the global warming we do not have enough of real cold. The dreaded Ips beetle is destroing pine and spruce forests in the mountains ... because we do not have 3 weeks of non stop -30 and -40Fs to kill them inside the tree trunks.
