I've grown them as annuals. They bloom for a long time. Do you have a place you could bring them in during the cold that doesn't get too warm, like a basement or crawlspace? I put a lot of my tender young plants under the house and will get them out as soon as possible, like when temps are back up to 29 or so. Looking at weather.com it appears that the cold snap will only last a few days and then no freezes predicted for awhile.

Thanks! I brought them into a room where I keep other plants and it can get some light, and never turn the heat above 62. I thought they were biennials or short-lived perennials, but there are many different kinds. I bought a couple plants at HD a few years ago and they lasted 2-3 years here in Durham. The purple one bloomed like crazy but had no fragrance. I had the orange ones from a wildflower seed mix years ago and bought these because I missed the scent. What kind do you grow?

Wallflowers, whether purple, orange or the traditional scented mixed colours are very hardy. My scented ones are now three years old and in bud now. They can take quite low temperatures. 62 would be unnecessarily warm. They would be down to freezing.

Thanks for your comment, floral. I brought them in for a night or 2 then took them back out. I'm glad to hear yours are going strong. I planted some seedlings out a while ago. Some made it, which I am watering occasionally. Some didn't, may have been damaged by squirrels. The ones I planted out have turned dark, reddish brown. It's hard to find them. Fortunately I still have some in the original pot to plant out. I was just hoping for blooms this year, bc it gets very hot and dry here in summer and I may not be able to save them over the summer. We have had warm weather here; They should be growing bigger but are not, so far. Doing the same things with sweet williams, which seem much easier to see a keep alive here. I guess maybe they do need a whole year until they bloom from seed. Maybe they will bloom in the fall?
