I don't WS veggies so I'll keep mum about that. I mostly WS perennials/shrubs and have done a few trees (apple, pear and, if I remember correctly, dogwood) for a neighbor. I generally start getting ready to WS as the solstice approaches but there's no real hurry here in Z6A--winter stays around long enough so most everything sprouts eventually. I prefer using milk jugs as over the years they've been the most reliable and easy to use. My house sits square with the compass and faces east so I set my WS containers on the north side up against the foundation. No worries about them getting too much sun that way.

I went a little crazy my first year, traded for seeds here on GW and WS 530+ milk jugs. It was overwhelming but all my garden beds got stuffed with the plants and they're all still thriving. I really enjoyed being able to plant multiples of my favorite perennials, something that buying plants wouldn't have allowed me to do.

I sowed most of my (hardy) annuals back in autumn (I lost count of how many...but there were a lot because of this years craze and potential moneyspinner- cut flowers) and perennials were in by November...although there will be another big sowing when my Hardy Plant Soc.seeds arrive in mid January. Most of the annuals are quite a size but hellebore hybrids, dierama, and melanoselinum decipiens are up already. My biggest anxiety is another umbel, thyselium palustre (which is the sole caterpillar food for our almost vanished swallowtail)...cost me an arm and a leg as seed set is sporadic and seeds must be superfresh. Once I actually have plants, all will be well...but it has taken me a long time just to source seeds....so nail biting.
