Design Help with Fireplace

I would like to change the look of my gas fireplace to something more contemporary/ modern as the brass accents and marble surround is not really my style. i prefer a more simple design with clean lines. Despite the many arguments I've read on this forum for and against putting a TV above the fireplace, that is what I plan to do since I think it is the best option for my small living room configuration. I am thinking of setting up a wall hanging on simple track system to conceal the TV when it is not in use. As for the fireplace, I would like to lower the mantle and have perhaps a floating mantle but I am unsure of what kind of surround I should have. Initially I thought of tiles but maybe something simpler. Also, how wide should the mantle be? (The wall is 76"W) How low could the mantle be placed? I would appreciate any thoughts on possible mantle and fireplace designs. Thanks!!

I propose a floor to ceiling stone fireplace and hang the TV as low as possible without damaging the tv. I vote stacked stone, no mantel and fireplace above.

you should check your local codes and fireplace, there may be a minimum distance for the mantel and or tv, I like Darzy's inspiration pic

You can go on line and search your specific gas fireplace and look at the specifications and requirements. That is first. While I like the inspiration photo I worry your room is too small for that much stone. Can you post a rough sketch of the room so we can see measurements. You do need to have your craft person check local codes as well. There are specific requirements for how far away from the firebox combustible materials should be including mantels. If you want a more modern look, and you can handle weight of stone, I might prefer flat marble for easier cleaning and slicker look. Are you buying a new flat screen TV ?
That would be a must if moving it to over fireplace. Lots of opinions on that here, but in reality I believe it is basically up to you as long as it doesn't invalidate your TV warranty. If you have the budget, it might be nice to build a box to house it in and beef up wall with fireplace for stone at same time. There are many Hide your TV systems out there but they are still quite pricey. Keep us posted.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I will be getting a flat screen TV and would like to hide it. I thought about going without a mantle but wasn't sure. I do like the look on the pic Darzey shared. I will try and provide a sketch of of the room.

18" above firebox is required around here for fire protection. No combustible materials allowed. It also has to be 12" around firebox itself. Most all have hearth stone for grace and floor protection. Simple thing to check on. Just call your local permitting office and ask for an opinion. Get the name of the person giving the advice.

The rating plate is typically near the gas control valve, which is usually housed behind the lower control door. This will have the brand and model number of the fireplace. This is the first place to start in order to tell how low a mantle or other combustibles can be. A mantle will help divert the heat away from the TV components.
