I have grown King Richard, from seed, started in March indoors. It was a small experiment and they weren't big enough to eat until late fall. I was told they were "summer" leeks by a northerner. I was surprised they survived summer heat. I grew them in 2015, which I believe was an extremely wet spring and they probably went in the ground late. I tried again last year with King Richard and american flag in the fall. Leeks were the first thing the chickens scratched up, I don't know how they would have done. American Flag is supposed to be cold hardy.

I have grown leeks several times, and in the last decade they have been grown from started plants I order from Dixondale Farm with my onion order each winter. The leeks come in a bundle just like the onions do. They do great here. The variety that Dixondale sells is Lancelot. Long ago I raised leeks from seed and they never reached the size of the ones I get from Dixondale's transplants.
