It's been raining here all day. We need it. It's just so hard on the animals, especially the dogs.

This must be the first serious rain we've had since our new roof/guttering was put on. And I've found a glitch in the guttering and/or dog yard design. The guttering lets off right into the dog yard and that is the last place I want to be muddy for a long time. Especially since much of the yard is shaded and is bare dirt. I'm thinking a rain barrel is in order.

We're under a Flood Advisory from now until midnight.

I'd say we've had at least an inch of rain in the last couple of hours and they're forecasting another 1-1.5" with more for locations near the Red River. Of course, we are near the Red River.

Our yard is a lake at the present time. Rainfall is good, but tomorrow will not be pretty, and I just finished mopping up muddy cat, dog and people pawprints/footprints from today.

The hard rain has knocked out satellite TV reception and I am sort of amazed we still have internet service so far. Tim cannot watch the Steelers-Chiefs game and it appears that the world is about to end because of that. At least the Steelers were ahead when we last were able to see the game.

Hazel, That does sound like a good spot for a rain barrel!

I hope all of you who have been in drought get great rainfall tonight. We were only abnormally dry, and that designation likely will go away if we get much more of this heavy rainfall.

Happy for y'all to get rain without flooding I can hope, and happy no one in my circle is out driving. It flash flooded and tornadoed here. A mile, mile and a half is too close.

We have 6 VFDs and EMS out at the scene of a severely storm-damaged home in the northeastern part of our county. It initially came in as reported tornado damage, but more likely was straight line wind damage as a squall line moved through with heavy rain, brief heavy wind, etc.

We lost not only the satellite TV (for ages!) here but cell phone and internet during that same time frame. Everything is back working again, but that one family with the storm damage apparently has suffered quite a lot of damage.

So far today, the last time I checked the rain gauge, we were over 2" of rain for today and most of that fell in just a couple of hours. That would give us almost 3" for this multi-day weather event. I'm so grateful it fell as only rain and not ice or sleet.

I'm so grateful for the rain as we so seldom have enough rain. It is hard to complain any time we get rain that it is too much at once because we all know what it is like to go for long periods of time with little to no rain.

Things seem to be settling down here, but I guess the garden will be too muddy for me to work out in it for at least the rest of this week.

I found a rain barrel on Craigslist for $40. Just need to figure out how to install it properly.

Hoping for a little sunshine. The coop really needs to be cleaned today.

Our rain gauge got a crack and we haven't replaced it yet, so I have no idea how much rain we got.

Yay! Rain!

We have had sunshine since around 11 a.m. and it is so good to see the sunshine again. The rain was great but after 4 or 5 days of cloudy, misty, foggy gray crap in the sky, it is just nice to see blue skies and sunshine.

Well, it looks (from the map) like we got close to 2", so I'm grateful for that! We needed it.

We ended up with 1 1/2" of rain and sunshine today, life is good. Sorry to hear about the close tornado call and wind damage. We were lucky all the way around this weekend.

The family whose home was destroyed by the straight line winds was featured on the local news today and my heart goes out to them. The house lost the entire roof and the rain poured in, ruining virtually everything inside. They heard a mighty rushing wind but there's no radar indications of a tornado, so I am wondering if they got hit by a downburst or microburst. It all happened so quickly that they couldn't make it out of the house to run to the tornado shelter, so they had to hunker down inside the house and hope for the best.

Regardless whether it was straight-line wind, a downburst or a tiny tornado, their home is considered completely destroyed, hurt as much by the water damage as the wind damage. I am unsure if it was their travel trailer or someone else's that rolled 25 yards, but it looks bad and surely is totaled too. On top of that, they had a large flock of chickens. Of course the wind demolished their chicken coop and killed 25 of their chickens. They just had a horrible, horrible experience. No other homes in their area were damaged at all. Talk about bad luck! For their sake, I sure hope they had good insurance coverage.

Around the time they got hit, we did record a wind gust of 48 mph at our local mesonet station (which is nowhere near where they live) but the local TV meteorologist who viewed video of the damage of their home estimated the damage was caused by winds of 60-70 mph. Having seen what those fairly low winds (low compared to the winds from a high-category tornado) did to their home, I know I cannot even comprehend the kind of damage that your tornado did to your place several years ago. The power of Mother Nature is just stunning.

There's more rain in our forecast today and tonight. Really, now? Why is it all falling at once when we're already in mud up to our ankles? Rain here in OK doesn't seem to space itself out very well. We get too much at once and then not enough at all for ages and ages. I shouldn't complain. The higher relative humidity and dew points have temporarily brought the winter fire season to a halt, though I know it won't last. Even the chickens are tired of the mud and the cold, wet ground. They cluster on top of the tornado shelter and set there in a big group as if stranded on a desert island. I guess the concrete of the shelter soaks up sunshine (when the sun ventures out from behind the clouds) and warms up and that feels good to cold, little chicken feet. At least it is only rain in the forecast, and not ice, sleet or snow.

Me too! I don't think we're expecting much tonight but we have an 80% chance of something. After enormous flooding in both 2015 and 2016, I am wary of having too much rain again. A third wet spring in a row in our garden would be absolutely unprecedented and might push me over the edge. I'm much more used to dealing with drought and a lack of rain than with having a river of water running through my garden for weeks or months on end. It would be nice if we'd have one year, just one piddly little year, where the rain fell in just the right amount at just the right times. That's never going to happen.

We got light right, Kim. I hope you got good rainfall. It is good to go into planting season with plentiful moisture in the ground as long as the ground isn't too wet to plant.

We got another 0.30" overnight and remain about a half-inch ahead of our local Mesonet station in rainfall for 2017. With the ground heavily saturated from earlier rainfall, it looks like that whole 0.3" puddled and ponded on the ground because it cannot soak in yet. Still, it is hard to be unhappy about the rainfall.

So far, January rainfall has been pretty kind to most of Oklahoma. Here's the January 2017 rainfall, as recorded at the OK Mesonet stations, expressed as a percentage of average year-to-date rainfall:

Sweet. I know right now the ground is puurfect after the rains, but nothing I can do with it right now. And in the 60s? Torture, monn.

I am weeding and mulching today. It's going to be perfect. That rain was so loud on my camper roof I didn't fall asleep for hours. I think we got over an inch.

Let's be patient and see if the 60s last. January weather can swing wildly from beautifully sunshiny and warm back to cold and miserable very quickly.
