I used to work for Crate and Barrel and at that time, they didn't offer in-home design services, although some of the salespeople would do it if someone was planning to buy a lot of furniture. They are very well-trained and can definitely help with your floor plans, though. In any case, it is worth checking out because it sounds like it definitely fits your aesthetic! I also thought that Ethan Allen offered free design? Do you have a Room and Board? Edit: I just checked, and there's one in Boston and they offer free design services: http://www.roomandboard.com/blog/2014/08/get-started-free-design-services/ 

Not sure why you didn't have luck with Ethan Allen. They offer complimentary design and are great. I've used them for a few rooms in my house and was very satisfied. Was it the layout that you didn't like? They're very easy to work with.

Yes, measurements and a rough floor plan is v helpful!! You'll get great advice, and unlike store "designers " no one will be trying to maximize your spending, nor will you end up with stuff from only one place, which sometimes leaves you with a room that looks like a showroom (and not in a good way...)

IMO, Pottery Barn employees are not nearly as knowledgeable as other places (especially Crate and Barrel), but I've never used their in-home design services, so that could be totally different. (I used to work at PB too...) ;)

Pretty! Did you have any specific table in mind? The dining room looks traditional, with the molding and tray ceiling.

Ethan Allen has a Modern Glam Collection. Check it out on their website. We decorated our dining room through them using that collection. Not sure if that's something you were considering so I thought I'd share a pic...

Well you've come to the right place for free advice........Forget about them, what do you need - let the Houzzers give it a shot.

IMO you can buy a table and even dining chairs online , not so much sofas and LR chairs . I would google the table and then go shopping for the things you really need to sit in or lie on. I am not sure why you are not finding what you are looking for in at least one of the stores you mentioned , you might need to find a store more geared to contemporary furniture from Italy

The problem with using in-store designers is that their job is also to sell you only what they sell, so you will be limited by their products. I'm not saying that it will cost the same, but a lot of designers pass on their trade discounts for items they recommend, so it helps offset their fees. If you buy from Pottery Barn, for example, the store designer will charge whatever the store retail price is but a designer will probably get the item for 20% off the retail price. (Not totally sure if trade price is 20% off for pottery barn)

Back in the day, PB had a 40% employee discount, so you could get a part time job AND hire an interior decorator! ;)
