weed barrier over lawn?

I have about a 100 foot strip of lawn next to a vinyl fence. I don't like the grass next to the vinyl fence. I'd like to put some 3 foot weed barrier down extending 100 feet, but I don't want to take the time to rip up the grass (Kentucky blue). Can I put the weed barrier right over the grass? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this would be allowed in your home area, but I sometimes add a load of cardboard with rocks which effectively blocks out the light, and kills the plants (it is also a pretty good mulch in the end). Then put your weedbarrier over it...

Just heard a landscaper talk about this yesterday. He said if you use it be aware you need to put 3-4" dirt or mulch over it then maintain it so you don't have the material showing. Any it's weed-resistant, not weed-proof, so just be aware :)
