I need help deciding on curtains

I'm trying to decide on curtains for my dining room. Is there a design "rule" that says the curtain design should match the carpet design? My husband is more on the matchy-matchy side, but I worry that the design on the area rug is a bit trendy, so I'm not sure about investing in curtains will match. I've included a picture of the curtains that I'm wanting to go with. I'd appreciate advice!

Is this a better design option or still too busy? Would this be too much gray in one room?

No I would not recommend those curtains. A plain fabric will look much better. If I was custom-making them, I'd choose something white with a dark leading edge or trim to relate to the rug.

Cynthia, white would not be an option as I have small children and they definitely would not remain white! The walls are painted a Sherwin Williams color called Perfect Greige. What are your thoughts on either a light gray or dark gray? I'm also looking to get them light blocking and thermal, but would consider different options.

How formal are you? It looks like your dining chair cushions are gold. I think a gold/grey silk stripe will look nice. I know you didn't ask but I think your candle holders are too much. I would also change those out.

Christy, the chairs will be getting reupholstered. I can't be very formal with children who sometimes run through the dining room.

Hi! If you are looking for patterned curtains, the best rule is to remember to mix the scale of the patterns. You have a medium to large pattern in the rug so a smaller pattern would work best in the curtains. You can easily mix patterns as along as they aren't all the same size/scale. If your chairs are getting upholstered in a pattern, this would also apply. Good luck!

I would go with washable grommet top panels in white. There are very inexpensive ones out there.

Hi Jennifer, it does look like it would be too much gray if the rug is also gray. The pattern is better though. Are you only looking for blackout curtains? Something like this could bring in some color. https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Semi-Sheer-Ombre-Grommet-Curtain-Panel/11605733/product.html?refccid=4OED3I43SL3J2C2H3GOUQN3LRE&searchidx=21 or you have this with different shades of gray but the blue or yellow could be nice for some color. https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Arashi-Ombre-Embroidery-Curtain-Panel/11003145/product.html?refccid=ADTX7IXBBDHKXLKPIH2CEAWYEI&searchidx=63

Also, you could try a lighter gray than the rug or the reverse color of white background/gray or taupe pattern if you want it to be subtle. If there's some pattern, it might not be as daunting with children if there's pattern on a white background rather than all white. A pop of color could come in your chair fabric or how you style your table.

Ok...I found these! Wondering if this is a good compromise. I do feel like I need thermal curtains because I live in the Midwest and we tend to have some extreme temps and I hope that thermal would help with controlling the temp in our house. I really appreciate all the advice and opinions!

Hi Jennifer...definitely agree with the thermals! Those will look really nice!

I would go with a smaller (different) patterned curtain in white/light grey or a solid neutral grey. I think matchy matchy is outdated and reminds me of my mother's generation.

The drapes you picked out are too similiar in patter to rug. A modern floral would look good with geometric in rug.
