Kitchen Layout Design Question

last modified: 9 years ago

I posted this on the Houzz site, and someone suggested that I post over here, as well. We are about to remodel our 10 x 12 U-shaped kitchen. We'd like to take down the wall between the kitchen and adjoining dining room and layout the kitchen in a Galley-style design. We also want to "wall over" the half wall facing the family room and eliminate the eat-in portion of our kitchen so that we have more cabinet/counter space.

I have a rough plan (not to scale) that I will use for our visit with the architect. We will also hire a CKD and a reputable GC.

My questions:

1) Should we consider a peninsula? or would that chop the space in half? If you have a peninsula in your galley kitchen, would you recommend it?

2) Does this layout look workable, given the appliance placement and the size of our kitchen? We are a family of 4 and I cook all of our meals, and bake for friends and family. The fridge will be on the opposite end of the appliance wall.

I appreciate any advice or concerns that you could share with me!

    This is the plan.

This is what our kitchen looks like, now. The dining room is off to the left side of this photo. Where the cabinets and the fridge is, is the wall we want to remove.

Do you want extra seating in the kitchen, for someone to hang out as you cook, or for kids to do homework? I'm not fond of peninsulas, but if having one suits your needs, and you have the space, they are useful. What is the total length of the sink wall, including dining room, and measurements between windows?

Actually I'd do something similar to Mama, but would put the cooktop where mama has put the pantries. I'd flip where you have the wall ovens and fridge move them in towards the center a bit more and on either end of the wall oven and fridge add two pull out pantries.

By moving the cooktop to where mama put the pantries, you can have a large prep and/or baking space between the sink and cooktop.

These are all great ideas! I hadn't thought of moving the cooktop. I had just assumed it would have to stay where it is. Love the idea of seating in the kitchen, but I don't think I have room in the kitchen itself. That's why I was considering a peninsula. Still not sure if I'm a fan of that. Thank all so much for taking time to answer my questions!

I know you stated that the drawing is not to scale, but counting the widths of the cabinets on the bottom wall, and the 70" window, it looks as if there might be 12' between the center of the garden window and the left edge of the 70" window. I think that's too far between the sink and cooktop, if you will have only one sink. Do you want a prep sink between the clean-up and cooking zones?

Without the exact measurements, I'm just guessing.

By seating in the kitchen, I meant a peninsula between the kitchen and dining area. You could put the DW and sink on the peninsula, prep in front of the garden window, and center the cooktop between the two windows. I added a prep sink in the corner, in front of the 70" window.

I had un-recessed the fridge in my previous plan, and pulled the cabinets on the bottom wall out to be flush with the fridge box--sorry I forgot to mention that in the previous post. In the following plan, I moved the cabinets on the bottom wall back to the original position. In this plan dishes could be kept in the cabinets beside the fridge, for
convenient unloading and easy access for anyone setting the table:

The fridge could also be moved over as cpartist suggested earlier:
