Peace lily HELP.

Recently got a peace lily from my mother in laws funeral. It's going to break my boyfriends heart if this thing dies on me. I noticed when I brought it home a few pieces in the middle of the plant were dead and slimy. I removed those but now half the plant is dead. The plant smells horrible like garbage. The pot has drain holes on the bottom. No signs of insects.
