if you have under watered, many of the fine roots may have perished. they will grow back, in time, but as aegis said, don't love it to death … by over watering

The AVs condition has neither improved nor worsened. I suppose it is just taking its time

Just make sure you keep it lightly moist, not soggy. Spraying the leaves with lukewarm water helps too. You can do it 2-3 times a day. As the guys explained to you - your plant is regrowing feeder roots, it is trying hard to survive. After the roots recover - plant will slowly come back - it will shed some leaves and grow new ones. But drying soil to the bone is traumatic for the violet. Try not to do it again. One time - it will come back after the shock, next time it will die.

I put my plant under a grow light for a couple of days, and the next time I watered it, it perked up. A couple weeks with more water = little to no change. A couple days with more light = sudden recovery?

Ive seen plants stretch for light, and drop leaves- I didnt know that low light levels could make a plant wilt, or contribute to wilting

I don't think that it was the light, ... just that the plant was ready (new roots grown) to perk up when it did.

Certainly, it wasn't light (or lack thereof) that caused the wilting initially. Probably, as we originally thought, lack of water.

It doesnt seem to connect so I suppose it could have been a coincidence.

However I did read that blue light, such as that which occurs just before the sun rises, stimulates the stomata on the leaf to open. The light that comes in through my north winter does appear blue now that it is wintertime.

Open stomata = more water loss

In any case, it is looking much happier now, so Im glad. :-)

When I have an african violet that's in that condition, I remove many of the outer leaves (since it has lost many of its roots it has a harder time supporting a large plant up above) and put it under a clear dome or inside a plastic bag...sort of a violet hospital.
