Meyer lemon pruning question: when to hack??

Three of my Meyer lemons have suffered a bit of leaf drop this winter - Alexander the most. It is sad to see him bare in areas instead of his majestic former self. They do not show any sings of dieback, so I am not terribly worried about them. My concern is that I want to prune back Alex - he has some gangly branches that are now bare and I noticed some branches are already sprouting leaves. I don't want to hack once the leaves are in, but I know it's not ideal to cut now. He needs to be shaped some even if it means he will not bear as much as he did last year. Should I cut back now or wait a few more weeks? I just don't want him to start budding out everywhere and end up gangly like he is now... Strangely enough, I have two meyers in my sunroom that have had NO leaf drop...go figure...
