Its finally that time to replace HP.

Its finally that time to replace HP. Have a 15yo 10 seer builder grade Bryant. 1500 sq ft ranch with crawl space. Live in Georgia where humid summers are more prevalent than cold winters.

Thinking single stage, but considering the benefit of bumping up to two-stage. Looks like $1,500 or so bump. Understand that the 2-stage would be more comfortable and efficient in those hot humid summers, but cost is a consideration.

Considering the Trane XL16i vs Am Standard Silver 16. 2.5T. Both installers with good reps locally, and have used one to service old unit over the years. Are there comparable but less expensive models/brands? Have had a hard time getting arms around those comparisons.

They've indicated that there is mold around the handler from condensation of uninsulated ductwork. Given there are some allergy problems in the household, they've recommended replacing and redesigning the ductwork. Does replacing 15yo ductwork seem appropriate? Have also recommended replacing the 5 in floor returns with a Perfect Fit media air cleaner.
The Trane all in (w/ matched handler) is right around $12K. Still waiting on numbers from the Am Standard installers.

Any thoughts, advice, etc. helpful.

You are basicly asking someone to choose for you. There are plenty here willing to spend other folks money so you are in luck. My feelings are,$1500 isn't enough to quibble over if you are already spending $12K. There's no way of me knowing if ducts require redesign. Redesign not withstanding,if ducts are metal and in good shape I'd make sure they are well sealed and insulated then keep them. Foil wrapped flex might last through the life of another unit. Get everything right and mold (present or future) will not be an issue. Sound's like you realize it already but quility of labor is more important than quility of equipment.

Understand that the 2-stage would be more comfortable and efficient in those hot humid summers, but cost is a consideration.

2 stage will be more comfortable in your neck of the woods (better humidity reduction and less noise/drafts from vents) but you won't see any appreciable increase in efficiency or lowering of electric bills over a single stage.

If you are wanting to go to 2 stage AC or HP my recommendation would be to go with a communicating system. The performance of a communicating system is far greater than just merely a 2 speed system with a 2 stage control.

The problem with communicating systems is that some manufacturers only offer them on the very high end of their equipment spectrum. The manufacturing warranties on these tend to be much better than just a generic single stage option, but realize manufacturing warranties vary from one manufacturer to another.

Look for an Amana dealer in your area. The communicating systems for Amana / Goodman start at 16 SEER. These systems are engineered, designed and assembled in the USA. (Houston, Tx)

Communicating systems while nice come with a cost...I still believe Goodman is a troubled brand...

    Goodman is troubled?

Daikin (current parent company of Goodman) recently built a nearly 1/2 billion dollar state of the art production / engineering / design center just on the northwest corner of Houston @ 290 and 99 (Grand Parkway).

If this spells trouble, count me in.
