Adding some whimsy to a "dated" red dining room with fabric?

last modified: 9 years ago

We eat in our dining room every night. I still like the red more than other colors at this time and have been trying to find another color for years to redo it with to no avail. I still love red dining rooms it seems. I have black toile fabric on seats on a window seat that after many children and cats needs to be switched out. I want something a little bit lighter and fun. I have grey and turquoise or more accurately sea foam colors in the adjoining living room and want to add some turquoise to the dining room too.

I found this bird fabric for very cheap and I like it for it adds a bit of whimsy to the heavy room but not sure if it looks wrong. Here it is wrapped around the seats and window bench, which is being rebuild in a few weeks so I need to decide in the next few weeks. We are also replacing the chandelier as soon as I can decide on one I like best.

Thoughts( pillows go with present toile fabric and will be replaced after I finalize my fabric choice)

Oh I am so drawn to the colorway you are showing, Pal but was afraid to incorporate it into a red room. I so trust your judgement so I am excited if you do really think it would be ok in the red room! I do not necessarily need a bird fabric but thought because there is a bird feeder right outside the window seat it might be a good way to bring some lightness into the stuffy room...do you think a blue/green might really work?

roarah, check out eBay for Thibaut fabrics, There are a lot of listings, many for enough that you'd need to cover the cushion. This is an exceptional bargain, as it's a discontinued one. But 2.75 yards of Thibaut Camelot for $10.80!

You probably don't want red, but what a bargain. I have taken a pic from online as I think the auction pic is off in its color.

I think you would have to remove the traces of black if you introduced the aqua.

Nor does it work with the rug. If the draperies are staying I would find something that incorporates that colour as well. I honestly have no idea what the colour is.

My3dogs, I am not sure if that is enough to do seats and bench but I think I will get it to see if the reds work and if it is enough I love the fabric! Thanks for the link.

the black accents will go when the black and white toile is replaced and the rug is just till kids are better at spills and I am one who grew up with old oriental rugs treated as neutrals even when not matching so it does not bother me that much when a rug is an outlier. The curtains, wall, seats and accents do bother me and I am having a hard time liking anything I try....

thanks for helping me rule this fabric out. Off to find new options today.

Is that fabric, wallpaper, or tile on the corner hutch wall? It looks black and white. Is that what you are replacing? It is beautiful. If you are trying to introduce some sea foam or shades of blue-green I might suggest placing a few pieces of aqua stemware or dishes in your corner cabinet. You could also incorporate red and sea foam with a corkscrew tassel or fringe trim along the inside length of your drapes. They look sheer and unlined and might serve you well to replace. I would also consider recovering the dining chairs with a solid fabric that is durable and easy to clean like an ultra suede or sunbrella indoor/outdoor fabric. The print mentioned above would also look gorgeous made into a simple roman shade. You have a lot of options. I would begin taking a large wall color paint sample and couch cushion fabric shopping and see what you are drawn to. Best wishes. Have fun.

    My random thoughts:

The new fabric seems too light and doesn't have enough oomph for your wall color.

I don't think you should necessarily match the window seat cushion to your chair cushions. Maybe 2 different fabrics, and if you want to tie them together visually, use the dining-chair fabric to make toss pillows for the window seat.

I would take the turquoise "idea" from the adjacent room but punch it up to something closer to a dark teal. I think that will work much better with the red and black.

Not necessarily these fabrics, but this depth of color. (Or even deeper on the teal -- just couldn't find darker samples quickly.)

Do the drapes stay? TBH, I don't think they're adding anything to the room.

Finally, have you ever considered painting the wall molding red (wall color) instead of white? I think those white lines create a level of busy-ness that is sort of distracting. We have similar woodwork in our DR, and originally had it painted white, but changed it years ago and I like the room much better that way. Just my two cents, which you are welcome to ignore. :-)

I absolutely love your red, but agree to paint the molding red, too.

The molding is the first thing I saw in the room, and I agree it should be the same as the wall color. I like palimpsest's first pattern very much, although both are pretty. For the dining chairs I like the idea of stripes in the color of the pattern, turquoise and red. I agree about the curtains. I would get a cream color and try to make them hang straight, if that's possible.

Sueb, could you tell me the name of the second fabric you posted -- the turquoise geometric?

Oh thankyou for more suggestions. Nothing but the furniture needs to stay. I am not sure how soon I can get to painting the mouldings but have been thinking about it for a while too. I am not attached to the drapes either.

sue, I too love the second fabric! Do you know the source.

Great idea using two coordinating fabrics for the window and chairs.

Christy, the china cabinet is removable wall paper borders placed together to look like wallpaper. I did it ten years ago and am also ok with changing it when the other options are chosen ;) thanks for the ideas.

Oh sorry, all I did was google "dark teal and red fabric" and grabbed a couple of images that popped up. Maybe you'll find it by googling the same thing?

This may not be the right red.. http://www.sailrite.com/Covington-Whimsy-Mardi-Gras-Fabric?gclid=CKrDlO2Hm9ICFdgGgQodelUAyA

If you are artistic you may be able to come up with your own pattern.. maybe let your kids design it.
