I have two Zefferine Droulins that are about 6-years old. I have actually never pruned them, but they are crowding out their neighbors. More importantly, a few of my roses get hit by RRD, and I am thinking hard pruning might help with deterring/delaying infections (although there is probably no science behind it). Both are arching plans, about 6 feet tall (with 9, 8 feet long canes) and about 4 or 3 feet wide. I am thinking about giving them a hard pruning (i.e., cut them half in size) this coming spring, but I am a little concerned that I would be pruning out the spring flush. I did a little Google search, and it seems that a spring pruning might just be the thing to do. Can I prune them just like a modern rose? I am in NJ, and here I prune when forsythia blooms. Thanks
