Soil for raised beds...

User

I am wanting to install some raised beds in my garden this spring. I am thinking about using 2x10 or 2x12 boards for this. I have not settled on a size yet, but probably 3'x12' or 4'x12'. This is the easy part. I am curious what the best option is to acquire soil to fill them.

I leave near Cedar Rapids and Linn County offers compost for free to cheap depending on the amount. Can I plant directly in this? My local soil is very heavy clay and I don't have a good place to dig this much soil from anyway. I don't really like the idea of "buying dirt" but if that is really the only / best option I guess I could pick up a few loads of black top soil.

I look forward to your ideas and suggestions!
