Question for micro-mini growers

How close to your lights do you place your micro's? I have 6 I bought last fall. I repotted them and placed them under a dome. They are well established now and I want to see if I can get them blooming. They have been sitting back about 20 inches from a SE facing window. I have my mini's in a little green house with a cool white t5 bulb and they are beginning to bloom. I would like to move the micros in with them. The minis are about 6 inches from the bulb. Thanks, Susan

That depends entirely on the variety. Some won't tolerate a lot of light and others will need super bright light to flower. Usually the best rule of thumb is treat your micro-minis just like your other larger AV's. When you change the lighting of any AV do so gradually if you can. A sudden increase in light will often cause suckers to form on minis and may or may not produce tight centers. Use the usual guidelines for judging if they are getting too much or too little light the same as if they were standards.

Personally I grow my micro-minis right on the same shelves as my larger plants, tucked in here and there between or sometimes raised a bit higher. If you get a really stubborn one like the micro-mini trailer Kissaway, I have gradually moved it to FULL SUN for several hours of the morning because it's so stubborn to get it to bloom. Otherwise most of my AV's are about 10 inches to 12 inches from a 4 foot long T8 florescent that run 14 hours a day.

I am assuming that your T5 is not high output? I use T5 HO for my streptocparus and I find they are too bright for my AV's unless they are around the edges of the shelves. It bleaches the leaves, but then again it gets really hot here in summer in the Deep South.

Thanks for your reply. I am also in north Georgia...Hiawassee, probably further north than you, but still gets hot in mid day.

My t5's are not high output. I think I will put the micro's on the floor of the little greenhouse which will start them out about 6 inches from the light. I had said that my mini's were 6" from the lights, but when I just went to measure where the teeny ones would be, I realized the mini's were about 3 inches from the light. My bulbs are only 12" long and I think this makes a difference in light received as compared to a 48" bulb. My minis have been in the little house about 6 months, growing well with open centers. One is blooming now, hope the other 4 will soon join in.

Oh! Well howdy, neighbor! Hiawassee is further north and very pretty up that way. I love to ride my motorcycle up there and really should come up to do some plein air landscape painting and hiking.

It sounds like your minis are doing just fine. As long as you ease them into any new situation they should continue to do so.

If you are ever in my neck of the woods (I'm off of I-85 east of Commerce) you'd be welcome to come by! I'm sure I could send you home with more plants or at least swap leaves. I have 5 shelving racks here in my art studio and more elsewhere. I'm producing lots of babies for my Atlanta based AVSA club's spring show coming up in May.
