Marlene, both such deep dark colors. Do you find that colors are effected, especially dark or yellows if in full sun? I find here that they are darker and retain color longer in filtered sunlight.

Rick, When I notice dark blooms especially the purples and blacks I sometimes put them in complete shade. They then hold their color for days. I will post a picture of one of my very dark ones. The other blooms on this plant were a completely different color. I gave it a small amount of sunlight early in the morning. The flower lasted a week and was still black when it fell off the plant.

Maria Elena, Thank you. Yes, The two blooms pictured were on the same plant. The plant is from a KO seed. I do not know the name as the flowers were never the same as the mother plant and it was too much bother to keep the names on each seedling. So now when I buy different seedlings I just mix them all together and plant without naming. My plants grow on neglect in a very rocky mix - half 5mm stones and the rest potting mix, pine bark, perlite, blood and bone, osmocote and a little cow manure. I do not fertilize very often. I sometimes think that they believe that they are dying and produce blooms and seeds to keep their species from dying out.

Hmm! Then that seed is very unstable. I actually like the fact that you can get such differing blooms on the same plant and look forward to experiencing that firsthand. We know each seed in a pod can potentially be genetically different. One may have more of the female parent's characteristics, while the other may have more of the male parent's characteristics.

Do any of these look like the one you purchased? I'm trying to see if we can pinpoint the genetics of your particular plant.

This flower was a complete surprise. An older plant and the first time it has flowered this colour. My plants are all grown hard and I have not repotted this season. Maybe this is the reason for so many different colors than the normal color.

Rachel, Their color changes depending on what time of the year that they flower. The humidity does play a big part in the color.

Wow they are stunning Marlene, I do like the dark color Adenium flowers. I wish some of my seedlings come out dark. I cannot buy from KO due to WA hard quarantine laws. I just enjoy seeing the photos.

Agartta - Western Australia won't Even let you import even if your shipment comes with a Phytocertificate? I can understand though, there are some states here w/ pretty tough invasive species laws.

Hi Rob, I know WA has tough laws, if I import with photosanitary certificate they will still put them under the microscope, and I have to pay any other expense.

I wish I could get a bold skinny purple graft fron Thailand, sweet dreams in Western Australia lol.

Wow, sorry to hear that but Australia does have a delicate ecosystem. Maybe seed is easier, less expensive to get in? I understand getting purples is something less than 10 percent even if you cross purple to purple but once you can get the genetics on site, you can do your own hybridizing from there. Or just bite the bullet and pay the fees to import a good purple graft and go from there to reproduce it to recoup your investment.

Hyn Patty, I would so love to impot a purple graft from Thailand, I did send an email to the West Australian Agriculture impot customs about importing a bare soiless Adenium plant, see what they reply to me. If I bite the bullet and get one sent, it will break my heart if it gets distroyed. I did planted purple seeds, see how nice and pink they will be lol .

I will wish you luck with it. I have a couple of grafted purples coming myself that I hope to try to produce seed from so we'll see. Obviously those who /already/ have purple flowering adenium in Australia are also possible sources for both seed and grafts.

These are the purple seeds I planted from purple mothers.

The top one is Indigo Diva and I put down seed from a selfing of that one myself. It was a bad batch of seed though which I ultimately only got one seedling from. Rinoa replaced the faulty seed with a great batch that germinated very well but didn't have any purples left to replace my original order. Hopefully yours will do better! They sure are pretty so good luck with them and I hope you get a winner!

The two purples I ordered recently are coming from the Adenium Center. They are Cool Blues and Triple Indigo. I'd still like a purple that has strong pink undertones like yours but I can work on my own hybrid crosses later and see what I can come up with.

My hope is that with long term continued 'line breeding' of purples over time, crossing purple to purple will eventually raise the odds higher than the current 'less than 10 percent' on favorable offspring. More data is needed.
