They're beautiful! Oak trees are my favorite. We have 10+ acres of native woodland and only one acre of it is not dominated by oaks. That acre, at the back of our property, is dominated by very old cedars. I'd rather have oaks any day of the week. They are the toughest, strongest survivors, although the Drought of 2011 was so bad that even many oak trees died around the state. We cut down cedars every chance we get (otherwise they'd cover every square inch of our property), but we have never yet cut down one oak tree, and never will....unless one dies and is in a spot where it is hazardous to leave a dead oak standing.

Nice! I'm going to plant (or my sister is going to plant, but she doesn't know it yet. haha) an Oak tree this year. Should I wait until the fall?

I really don't know, Hazel. If I were to plant a sapling I might try one right now down here; I suspect October might be better. And the only tree I know ANYTHING about down here right now is the white oak family--white, post, blackjack, and burr. Took me 2-3 days of reading to decide ours are white oaks (quercus alba) and/or white oak hybrids. I'm sure nearly everyone else would know more about planting them. :)

You can plant trees from containers any time, but fall, winter and early spring are the best times so the roots can settle in, adapt and grow before the beastly summer heat arrives. If I was planting bare root trees, I wouldn't plant them after February or early March because we just heat up too fast.

I spotted the elm leaf. As for those black walnuts, yep, they do have a way of making themselves known. I'd hate to try to raise anything desirable around them and am glad ours are off deep in the woodland where I don't have to deal with them.
