Bedroom Blues . . .

How's that for a catchy title? :)

My SO and I lived together for 2.5 years in a
house I owned. At that time, it was fairly easy for me to integrate
his stuff into my space, in a way that made him feel like it wasn't just
"all me." I had a huge basement for storage.

We're about to
move in together again, this time into a house I inherited from my
parents. Not sure if this is going to be our permanent abode or not.
The house
is nice, it just has some issues, one of
it being that there isn't very much storage. I've had things in outside
storage before, and I just don't like that option right now. In our
last house, I turned over the guest bedroom to SO for his "man cave".
Worked out great, but in this house, the guest bedroom, just due to the way
things work out best, is my "boudoir."

So I'm having a really
difficult time figuring out how to configure our shared bedroom to hold
all of our clothes, even the seasonal ones. We can store off-season clothes in another spot so that's not the issue. Our bedroom has one closet, which we can share, but he
doesn't need much space for hanging things. He has a TON of shoes
though, and so do I. I'm not lovin' the idea of a bunch of cheap,
mismatched furniture in the bedroom. We have three plain small wooden
dressers, but they don't hold the majority of our stuff. SO doesn't
much care for "modular" things, he likes real wood, and I don't like
particle board furniture. My "go to" solution has been to use IVAR pine
shelving in various configurations, but SO lived with that before and
doesn't like it.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice or
experience to share on how you created aesthetically appealing storage
in a bedroom? How you share space with your SO harmoniously. How you
went about combining your things and taste? The only thing that is
a given, is this dresser. It was from my grandmother. I also
have both of the pieces from this other shot, the dresser with shelves
on top and the three drawer dresser next to the bed, on the right.
These photos are from my old house. Our new bedroom is about 1/3 smaller
than our old. I'm kind of skeptical of having shelving over the bed in this house. I have no shots of the bedroom in the new house, but one wall has the entrance door and the closet, the other the bed, and the third wall has a window in the middle of it. That's the wall I am thinking would look OK with shelving on either side of the window, but SO says NO! I have that IVAR pine shelving already in the guest bedroom and the sitting room, so he is just sick of it! The dresser is on the fourth wall across from the bed.

Exactly Errant, I kinda wanted to go for that look, only modular instead of built in. The only problem is, the heat vent is below the window and I don't want to block that.

well when i was young and started having a family of my own, and lived in a country where one didn't have built in closets(not talking walk-in closets now..it's just that a bedroom doesn't come with a closet)-we bought a big 5-doors armoire

i bet it's still there lol. that was a good one. painted blue by the way...with not-painted maple border around each door. going almost up to the ceiling-and ceilings were minimum 9 feet i think. we had higher standard ceilings there.

(interesting how i always think i'm not a big fan of blue..then I remember this and that lol..right now our bed has warm blue upholstery. )

Armoires are expensive as hell when new..yet there are many amazing ones on Craigslist-folks didn't catch the drift just yet, but they will..like they did with mcm. so now it's the best time to hunt for them. delivery can be a hassle though-size weight and all

I love your room. An armoire will take lots of space though, if you go for a one that's really roomy. so it'd be a choice of what's staying.

There are lots of ways to place furniture over HVAC registers without blocking the flow of air! Here are just two options I found after a very quick Google search for "floor register deflector:"

That was our old bedroom April. We loved it too. The new one is much smaller and doesn't have a window seat. We left an armoire that matched the three drawer dresser with shelves on top. Was probably a mistake but I didn't envision needing it again. Now IKEA has dropped that whole line and I can't even get another one or a matching dresser again, which would work. I'd like whatever is on one side of the window to match the other, at least in style. That's why I am having such a difficult time figuring out what to do. Don't want to buy two matching dressers, because that leaves a lot of space above unused. That's why, to me, the perfect solution is to use tall IVAR units with storage bins out of cardboard covered with fabric or wicker, metal, etc. for the clothing and shoes, but SO is very adamant that I have to end my relationship with IVAR.

    Upgrade to PAX :)

There are some super cool IKEA PAX hacks.

pinkmountain, do you have a pic/dimensions of the-now bedroom?..

OK, but it is very cluttered, and SO hasn't even come back with all of his clothes and the dressers yet. It's 12 x 12 ft. I am probably going to paint it this weekend or next too. Ignore the pictures hung in random spots, that's just where there were some nails in the wall from the previous owners. There's a small IVAR in the corner, which looked much neater when we started out. I have two of the tallest units too, plus more shorter ones. Maybe if I got it all painted and set up with IVAR and it looked great he wouldn't hate it so much? But I'd still like to do something else, the bloom is off the rose for me and IVAR too, but he is reliable.

yep..gonna be tough with an armoire..actually with IVAR too if you ask me. i'd be inclined to keep the furnishings to the minimum. closet doors are very pronounced already, and frankly-i don't know if i'd paint them..seems like a nice wood

do you have all sort of organizers inside the closet? these can be really helpful. shoe racks, sweater hangers..the list goes on. i rely on these a lot.

also-it can be deep enough to accommodate a real dresser. maybe two.

also-roll out things for under the bed?..can be boxes too, but these roll outs are more handy i think

(i know it's considered bad feng shui..but it is a good unobtrusive storage space)

No, I would never paint the closet doors, it's the walls that I am going to paint. We do keep bed linens in boxes under the bed.

I have enough frames to put one of these on either side of the window, and could paint any color.

Have also toyed with painting the dresser white, but why spoil the nice wood look? I can paint any of the other pieces in the room and that other IKEA dresser, and my headboard, which is going to be like this, we have it already, SO is bringing it with our queen bed. Oh yeah, forgot to add that, the new bed will be queen and so less space between bed and wall. I do want a minimalist look. That's why I will be painting the walls and taking down the floral border, to simplify. This is one of my inspiration pics, since I have a picture like that to hang over the bed. And blue linens are coming too.

I guess I'm a little confused: If you're using the guest room as your "boudoir," why don't you keep your clothes in there, and your partner keep his in your bedroom?

don't paint the dresser i totally agree-it's lovely as is

next to your headboard-i'm afraid the IVAR'd be too much, even if painted the wall color. too much storage on the perimeter. with a visually lighter headboard, like the one you had before-then yes

i'd maximize the storage in the closet by putting there racks, modular shelves, organizers, bins, parts of IVAR, ready made dressers..whatever you can think of.

i also keep these hangers on the kids'/guests bedroom doors, for bags/jackets and such..frees up some space in the closet. not my favorite look, but some of these are actually cute, in addition to being helpful. mine are from Urban Outfitters, TJ MAXX, and the likes.

My clothes are in the boudoir, (which has a tiny closet) AND in the bedroom. Sigh. I have too much stuff! I can't keep anything on the back of the closet doors because they fold open. I do have something on the back of the room door, for tights, scarves, nylons, shoes, some cloth belts, etc. SO just has jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts or flannel shirts, ballcaps and SHOES. That's pretty much all he wears, almost nothing to hang up. He's covered closet-wise.

yes, i meant the back of the door ones

if it's mostly for your things to hang-they sell these open racks now..i'm not a fan since it looks great only when you have minimal well edited amount of clothes..which sometimes is true lol. but it is very visually light. there's usually platform for shoes as well

(and they cost too much if you ask me..from what i saw)

Would your SO like two armours...one on either side of your dresser, so that it looks like one unit? Really doesn't need to be same style...just more or less the same color stain...then hang your dresser mirror vertical. These two armours could be used for any folded clothes you have, including shoes.

I love my IKEA pax, I have two in my master bathroom that I thought would just be for work clothes for they are not the deep ones but only 19 inches instead of their deep 24 inch ones, but they hold all my seasonal clothes. We also have a English armoire in our bedroom that is now only for ski gear and a small reach in for off season clothes. The IKEA pax are so efficient for the size!

I actually have my white stained paxes flanking a mahagony dresser. I was orginally going to stain them to match but after advice on this forum decided I liked the look of the white with the antique vanity...

There are underbed rollouts for shoes. I would think about those for both of you and look for another spot for the bedding. Do you have a spot for a storage bench for either the bedding or shoes (though most -- not all - of the shoe ones are open and not ideal as far as looks go).

I've been eyeing my Ivar shelves, too. Here are a bunch of makeovers I found:

Or a low cost version of Scout shelves (3K)

    In blue

    Fabric or paper

Ikea also has these shoe holders that might work. I saw them in person and wanted one for our foyer, but there's just no room, but they may work well in a closet.

Argh! I'm beginning to think I actually might want to paint the closet doors and trim. I'm really groovin' on the white built-ins! SO is actually a carpenter so we might do that some day. And someday we may rip out the blue carpet! Meanwhile I'm going for a blue, grey, earth tone beachy look in there, and the orangey wood trim is not helping! There is nothing special about the wood, it is plantation imported stuff probably. It's more laziness than anything. At least that would be one less wood grain and color in the room.

What do you think of this IKEA wardrobe, currently on sale at the Bedroom Sale.

I love that white wardrobe! I do envision it being all white and blue and red nautical, and am tempted to paint a lot of the non-descript furniture in there white . . . however . . .

SO is out east packing up to move in with me, and he schooled me on a couple of things about our bedroom. He WILL have his TV and stereo in the room, and if we ever get the other bedroom in the house, the master suite, back from being our storage room, and livable, this current room WILL become his man cave. And he reiterated, no IVAR! But I do have another modular set from IKEA, (I can't remember the name, but it is discontinued) with metal frames and laminate cupboards, drawers and shelves. He likes that one, and since it was my plan to put it in there when the room converted to "man cave" anyway, I might as well put it in there to start. It has a space tailor made for his stereo speakers and we had it set up in our last house with the stereo on it. Picture this wider, with one more shelf set in the middle, and the speakers in the narrow cabinets, sans the doors. Small TV where the mirror is.

I'm kind of going with a bold "northwoods" theme in there now, starting with removing the floral border, and painting the walls, either a very neutral creamy off-white or clear grey. I realized I can remove the folding closet doors and replace them with drapes. That will give me more wall space on the bed wall, quite a bit, and a way to tone down the orange wood vibe in the room. Not my ideal, but better and workable. Stay tuned for an update after I get it set up. I have a friend coming to help me implement it this weekend.
