Not enough information in your image to determine Diptera genus or species, perhaps someone will know which Family of flies it is in. Wing pattern and venation is important and does not show in your pictures.

Your second set of pictures eliminates more sub-orders and families, but that still leaves a lot of flies as possibilities. You might try posting to What's That Bug or to bugguide--although you haven't stated your location and many id websites specialize in North American insects.

In the UK. What more would you or they need? More of the same but closer in to see more detail or something else like Venation?

There would be people at the other websites that could ID your fly to the family or with luck the genus. And close-ups are desirable to ID insects lacking bold, colorful, or unique features. You might run into someone there that just happens to be familiar with that particular fly. The posted images will do.
