Yes, this material is called Calacatta Delicato marble and we applied a lightly brushed texture for better traction and better resilience to scratches and wear than a polished finish. The slab material was 3/4" thick, set on 1/2" cement backer board, which was on a very solid staircase. The preparation is the key because the marble needs a solid and stable sub structure. A good example would be the many historic marble staircases you have seen that are not cracked (hotels, train stations, buildings, etc.) because of good preparation. The scratches and wear are part of the patina that marble will develop.

Hi, can you tell me how the spindles are installed in the marble?? We are thinking in doing the same installation for my spindles on the landing step/floor. Do you drill the wholes before installing the marble land or after, once is on the floor??? If you can provide me with the installation information, it will be appreciated. See Pic. The black spindles that I will install and the actual landing which will be all new marble but with spindles directly on the marble piece. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that the marble piece on the floor is a 1 1/4" thick.

If the spindles are square, then they have to be cut prior to installation because field drills are only available round.

In this case, they were round so we purchased a special stone drill bit and drilled them on site with the stair railing installer. The iron railing was dry fit onto our stairs, hole pattern marked and a lot of drilling took place!

Also, I like the 1-1/4" thickness for treads.
