Fig tree help required.

I have a very large fig tree in my garden, planted it about 5 years ago. Up to now it has never fruited,until it started to lose its leaves in the Autumn last year, I saw approx 8 small fruits. Is this the start of many figs to come? Should I feed it regularly next year,is that why it has never fruited before? When do I cut it back? And by how much?
I am a gardening amateur, but willing to learn.
Thanks, will appreciate any advice.

We need to now where you are. And the type of fig you planted as well. Some start to fruit quite precociously while others take longer. It will also help to determine what sort of crop to expect, a breba (early) or the typical late summer crop.

It sounds like you like somewhere where there's only enough summer for the breba crop to ripen and it's possible that the particular variety of fig you have either has a very small or nonexistent breba crop (seeing as the fruits began to grow at the end of the summer).

So the main thing would be determining the traits of fig care on your climate. Of course if you live in the southern states and that is happening then there may be another issue since most figs will produce fruit within the first 5 years.
