Also do you think that the leaf looks unhappy? The other leaves look great but that one is slightly yellow and looks and feels kind of 'soft'.

All orchids will eventually shed their older leaves/pseudobulbs. Your leaf looks as if it's just shedding naturally. Let it dry completely, and the leaf will just detach from the stem. I prefer to leave it on until it dries completely. This way I don't cut the leaf off, leaving an open wound on the plant. As for watering the aerial root-you don't have to water them often, just a slight mist should be fine. Any water that gets on the leaf can just be wiped off with a paper towel.

How do you water and how often?

If it were me, when I water, I'd make sure that the air root gets wet. Water on the leaves is ok as long as you don't get it into the crown of the plant - especially the very top. I would not be concerned about the leaf. It is likely old and will drop off. If several more leaves follow or the top leaves discolor and drop off, that is a problem.

Thank you for your response! I just got the plant a few days ago and have watered it once. My other phal I got about a month ago (the first one I've had in forever)..with that one I have been checking it twice a week to see if it needs any water. The roots have looked like they needed watering about once a week. I have been pouring a little water into the plastic inner pot and then emptying out the larger ceramic pot. Does that seem like a good routine? I am really happy that the leaf doesn't seem too concerning to you. I want to try to keep this orchid for a very long time! Thank you again for your help!

The leaf is an old leaf and will eventually drop off the plant. Don't worry about it.

I would be more concerned about keeping the plant in a pot with no drainage.

Depending where you live, Springtime is the best time to repot the plant. Buy some orchid mix and plan to repot the Phal. Make sure the plant is getting good light.

For watering, I'd take the plant to the sink and run water through the plastic pot making sure all the bark gets wet. Let it drain in the sink and then you can place it back in the decorative pot.

You doing everything right. I don't water air roots like this, but I use dipper to water runaway air roots ( in addition to regular watering).

What's dipper?

I find that my Phals do extremely better with saved rain water or fresh bottled water than tap....I usually have a 5 gallon bucket filled with fresh water and sink the whole plant into it soaking it for about 5 minutes and then let it drip off..Or course I have a running fan for air movement...Mines love this watering technique..The roots stay nice and plump a green looking...I find watering them with a quick sip or quickly as you would a houseplant dos nothing for mine..

I appreciate all of your input so much. Regarding the water- we don't have much rain or snow here right now. I was using bottled water at times but then I saw somewhere that bottled water is hard water and isn't as good for the orchids? I am so happy to know about that leaf- I didn't know that they shed leaves sometimes.
