More Streptocarpus Blooming

Benomi of Japan with it's odd water marked lower lip. Promises to be a heavy bloomer.

Fred's Yellow Ice being stunning and very lemony this time around.

Johari by Nancy Braun looking lovely with a frilly top edge and flat open flower.

Harlequin Dawn reving up for a good show. Flowers are large and long lasting.

Bristol's Nightfall - in this case a much darker and more intensely colored flower than my photo suggests. This is also the original form which has variegated foliage, but not heavily.

Bristol's Kiss Me - the flowers may not have the best shape ever but it blooms like crazy!

Neil's Babe with huge almost 4 inch wide flowers! Easy grower, stunning. I made a post of this one elsewhere with lots of photos.

Bristiol's Spectacular - lovely fantasy but I've yet to get this one to grow and flower as well as I would like. It's doing better now but still not thriving.

Fernwood Minuet x Joker - compact strep with smaller narrow leaves, not quite a mini though. Heavy and early bloomer, it's really putting on a show for me now.

And lastly for today, Streptocarpus 'Valor' from Poland. Now my temperatures aren't so cold, the purple netting is receding and giving ground back to the yellow lower lip. In summer there is very little purple, but in deep winter is was almost solid purple below!

m-mm...i see streps in my future :)..need to increase my square-footage ;)...as the plant-family is bursting out of bounds...

All Gorgeous Hyn...I couldn't pick a favorite. I have 3 Streps, still babies.

If you trim the longest leaves and put the tips down you will soon have more babies! Backups in case you loose your plants. You can trim a leaf even on a very small baby and it will encourage the baby to make new leaves. Dale Martens gave me that advice and it has saved me many times when I lost the original plant that refused to adapt to my growing environment. New babies from leaves often grow better than the parent plants for me.

I certainly enjoy them. Care is much like their cousins, African violets, though streps don't tolerate heat well and they need to have good drainage. Light airy soil with 50% or more perlite is ideal if you wick them.

Streps need to be bumped up in pot size slowly so not to over pot them, as they do not tolerate staying wet. Also, slight root confinement between growth spurts is what triggers blooming, much like violets. They need to be potted high up on a tiny little mound is ideal to keep the newly emerging leaves dry, away from the soil line.

Little things like that, and slightly brighter light than AV's and you'll have amazing streps too! There's plenty of information online and some great groups on Facebook.
